High-pressure elemental studies have recreated the phase of iron believed to form up to 90% of the Earth’s core. Subsequent analysis of the elastic properties of this material help to explain why seismic waves from an earthquake travel 4% faster pole-to pole than across the equator.

1936 Inge Lehman descubre el núcleo interior sólido en la Tierra de unos 1250 km de radio
1996 Xiaodong Song y Paul G. Richards descubren su rotación diferencial con manto y corteza de en torno a 1º anual
2023 Yi Yang y Xiaodong Song (este repite) descubren una variación decenal posiblemente cíclica (70 años aprox.)
(y entre medias mucha discusión, medidas diferentes y algún que otro modelo disidente)
