Dmitry is back again with another minimal computer. Last time he managed to boot #Linux on an #Intel4004¹. Now he wants to run #vi, #gcc, and #make, ends up doing it on a tiny #STM #microcontroller with a luxurious 32K of flash and 8K of RAM. The 4004-based machine took a *week* to boot, this one takes just a minute!

It's again made possible w/ #MIPS #emulation. The overclocked host CPU emulates a MIPS #R3000 at 1.65MHz with FPU disabled.

Not to be outdone by someone somewhere putting Linux on a 30-year-old processor, Dmitry Grinberg managed to get it running “on” Intel’s very first microprocessor, the 40-year-old Intel 4004.

Linux was written for the i386 (Intel 80386) architecture originally. How did he get it running on something almost twenty years older that wasn’t forward-compatible? How did 32-bit code run on a 4-bit microprocessor? Well, it took some creative engineering, let’s say. I don’t want to spoil the article for you.
