"Jet streams are fast flowing westerly (moving west to east) air currents found around the world. Located in the tropopause, the layer of the atmosphere just below the stratosphere, jet streams are used in the aviation industry to shorten flying time all over the world. Ever wonder why jets frequently travel polar routes? In addition to covering a shorter distance, west to east routes may take advantage of the jet stream to further shorten flying time. Jet streams are located from 30,000 to 56,000 feet above the surface of the Earth and form at the boundaries of warm air and cold air. The strong winds, up to 200 miles an hour, are formed because of the pressure variations between the two temperatures of air. Because of the earth's rotation, the jet stream, does not move in a straight line. In November 1952, Captain Logan Scott, piloting a Pan American World Airways Boeing 377 Stratocruiser, made history by following these fast-flowing winds. Taking off from Tokyo, Japan bound for Honolulu, Hawaii, this flight flew non-stop for 3,908 miles and shaved off seven hours of flying time using the jet stream. I thought I'd look at meteorological parameters near #KleinNesthorn in Switzerland, where the mountain top is crumbling and rumbling down, 200,000 truckloads of rock so far.

Found 2 stations very nearby, Sion on 480m and Graechen on 1600m elevation, both with at least hourly records.
The longer-running station, Sion, online since 1955 on 480m, had its April all-time maximum of daily precipitation this year, which was 3 times as much as the 2nd maximum from 1974:
148mm.
The monthly sum was 228 and 100mm more than the 2nd maximum in 1993.

Graechen on 1605m only began reporting in September 2013.
It had its monthly record precipitation broken multiple times in each month from January-April.
10 days in April amounted to 824mm.
And it didn't have sub-zero temperatures since. So even if it was 824mm of snow, which I don't know, it would have melted immediately and filled every crevice in the rock.
January to March had these sums:
3696, 4942, 1440mm respectively.
That's tropical monsoon amounts! Like in Thailand or Jakarta.
Normal for these months are 20-30mm in this short dataset.

The pressure from this melt-water might have been enough to break rock. And it might have melted all the #permafrost "glue" as well.

That is, if Graechen and Klein Nesthorn received similar amounts of precipitation. I don't know tho. Klein Nesthorn might be on the other side of the "weather divide" and not receive the water dumps the #jetstream hurls up from the hot #Mediterranean Sea.

In the first, the top is bulging upwards. In each subsequent still photo, cracks left and right of the top open up further. In the last, the top bulge is now a negative cone, the snow has vanished and bare rock shows.

G-JMAC, British Aerospace Jetstream 4100, owned by the Speke Aerodrome heritage group, in the manufacturers in-house demonstrator livery, on display in the rear car park of the Crowne Plaza hotel, Liverpool John Lennon Airport (formerly Speke Airport), 11th March 2025.
This is probably the best preserved exhibit here, but is also the youngest exhibit.
The large car park here is actually the apron area for the original terminal building, which has now been converted into a hotel.

The Northern hemisphere summer #jetstream in 2018 manifested a wave pattern that led to simultaneous heatwaves and droughts in the Northern breadbaskets in USA Europe and Russia.
It's a wave-7 pattern in which the wind band shows 7 wave lows

What it laps up in the lower latitudes as warm temperatures is then dumped on the mid- to high latitudes.

And this, together with its impacts on food production in the affected regions, is projected to occur more often the hotter it gets.
