#LPSC

2026-01-27

The number of abstracts submitted to the Lunar and Planetary Science Conference (#LPSC) this year is down by almost 50% when compared to normal years.

It's hard to say what is the main cause, but big factors are Europeans who don't want to travel to the US, reductions of US research budgets, censorship of abstracts, and just your average hatred of Texas.

If you are unhappy about the decision by LPI/USRA to censor #LPSC abstracts, please consider signing this open letter:

Should #LPI and #USRA restore all censored abstracts? Should they commit to preserving scientific freedom of speech at #LPSC? And should they commit to not censoring #LPSC2026 submissions?

If the answer is yes, then sign this petition!

PETITION: CONDITIONS FOR ATTENDING LPSC 2026

Concerned members of the community have penned and signed an open
letter to USRA/LPI and USRA outlining steps that we feel must be taken
before we will consider attending LPSC 2026. These steps include
restoring all purged abstracts (except those where NASA has
specifically directed or first authors have requested removal), and
committing to preserving academic freedom of speech at the conference.
You can find out more here, and add your name (anonymously if you wish)
at this link:

This petition will be open until the end of July.

Why I will be boycotting meetings sponsored by the Lunar and Planetary Institute.

An open letter to the LPI executive board

#LPI #USRA #LPSC #BoycottLPSC #BoycottLPI #PlanetaryScience

An open letter to the Lunar and Planetary Institute executive office,

I am writing to ask that LPI provide a public statement concerning their ongoing attempt to both censor and rewrite history by removing previously published community meeting abstracts from their archives.

LPI is a trusted organization that plays an integral role in the planetary science community. They organize not only the annual Lunar and Planetary Science Conference, but also a multitude of smaller community meetings and workshops. It thus came as quite a shock to learn that LPI has decided to remove any trace of abstracts that contain certain non-offensive keywords or that are on topics that could be related to the federal executive order attacks on diversity, equity, and inclusion. Considering the 2025 LPSC alone, almost 100 abstracts have been removed from the program, being replaced with the text "item removed". Entire sessions have been deleted from the program, and the PDFs for the removed items are no longer accessible. In total, over 1000 LPI hosted abstracts are no longer accessible from the NASA ADS archive.

In response to the Trump executive orders, the Lunar and Planetary Institute (#LPI) is removing abstracts from previously held meetings that used to be archived on their website.

Here is an example of one that was removed from the 2025 Lunar and Planetary Science Conference (#LPSC).

A french researcher going to the #LPSC conference outside of Houston wasn't allowed to enter the US. After a "random" control at the border, the police searched their phone and computer and found compromising statements about Trump.

From the #LPSC 'NASA Night' youtube.com/watch?v=Ns4sVQ81Di a list of the next #CLPS missions: NASA will have more Stereo Cameras for Lunar Plume-Surface Studies (SCALPSS) on #BlueOrigin's HLS test lander. They also reported superb results from #BlueGhost with 6 of the NASA experiments already completed and the remainder being done once the hot noon is over. Not much came out of #Athena, obviously, and they're still trying to make contact with the Lunar Trailblazer - no indication of the hope level ...

Nearly eight years after its historic Pluto flyby, NASA’s New Horizons probe is getting ready for another round of observations made from the icy edge of the solar system — and this time, its field of view will range from Uranus and Neptune to the cosmic

Its official. #PlanetaryScientists did not migrate to mastodon. The first day of the Lunar and Planetary Science Conference is almost over and there are only about 5 posts on #mastodon, but hundreds on the site owned, run and censored by a sociopathic LGBTQ+phobe (among other things). Apparently, its business as usual for early career scientists that use social modia. 😞 #LPSC #LPSC2023

The Lunar and Planetary Science Conference (#LPSC) has been held in #Texas since 1970 when the first results from the #Apollo11 mission were presented. This year will be the last in Texas, and the organizers are searching for a new location.

This abstract "Ethics in choosing a meeting location" describes some of the issues that should be considered. "Is Texas safe for all members of our community? Unfortunately, the answer in 2023 is NO, they are not."

No Haiku's but two #LPSC abstracts submitted!

#1651 is on some work I'm doing to understand features in the volcanic floor units in Jezero.

#1668 is on some exciting open GIS standards that will help with cloud-computing-native PSDI!
