🇫🇷 Le bateau-feu "Fehmarnbelt" avait déjà atteint l'âge respectable de 99 ans lorsque je le photographiai à Lübbeck dans le Schleswig-Holstein en juin 2007 mais il était déjà un bateau-musée. Les bateaux-feux étaient utilisés là où il y avait un danger pour la navigation mais où la construction d'un phare n'était pas possible.

🇬🇧 Lightship "Fehmarnbelt" was already 99 years old when I photographed it in Lübbeck (Land of Schleswig-Holstein) in June 2007 but it already was a museum-ship. Lightships were mainly used to cover a danger zone where no lighthouse could be build.

The Spurn lightship, no longer on station, tied up alongside in a marina.

She has a black hull, and short white masts (for navigation lights and radio antennae, not sails) and in the middle a heavy black mast topped with a lantern exactly like a lighthouse. Because that is what she is, a floating lighthouse.
