Motorway missing #A143 #navigation

Went to New Echota today because they were doing an "orienteering 101" class. Started with finding my pace, then how to navigate using a compass, just bearing+direction. I'm the first person to have successfully completed the course since they revamped it this year!

I did struggle some, though, because the loaner compasses they had donated are terrible and require you to tap on them a bunch to get them to actually turn north properly. It was neat even though i was the only one to show up for it, and didn't think to wear pants... We went off the trails into the tall grass, so that would have been nice. #navigation #orienteering

Direction.

Because I have an iPhone, and I’m a little creeped out by Google’s data mining and associate invasiveness, I try to use Apple Maps as a navigational aid. This is if I use GPS-based navigational aids at all, because I have a certain talent for looking at a paper map and then being able to drive the route.

However, when I was out on the Great Plains last week chasing storms, there were times when I needed to get somewhere fast, so I would ask Apple Maps to guide me to where I needed to be.

This did not always turn out as intended. For example, as I was trying to get to North Platte, Nebraska, Apple Maps prompted me to turn right onto US 83 North. Keep in mind, I was headed eastbound at the time. Except in very unusual circumstances like loop ramps and overpasses, an eastbound to northbound turn is going to be a left turn.

I was out in the middle of nowhere.

In fact, to get to North Platte I needed to turn onto US 83 SOUTH. Turning the other direction (to the north) would have sent me away from North Platte, away from the storm I was chasing, and back into the Sand Hills of Nebraska.

I suspect that the postal address of this area of US Route 83 is called “US Highway 83 North” because it’s north of North Platte, but I don’t know this for certain. Nevertheless, should I have followed the right hand turn or the confident declaration of a cardinal direction? Because one of these things was wrong.

I’m happy I went with common sense.

Apple Maps still has bugs o’ plenty in its experience. You’d think that well after a decade of touting this product they’d have it working properly by now.

Does anyone have recommendations for better #navi #apps that can work with #AndroidAuto than stock #Google #maps or #Waze ? Tried out Waze today and it wasn't too bad, even had Paddington Bear narrating the turns but I'd rather use something less corporate (OSM based?)

Features I need -

* good basemap of UK roads and speed limits

* audible warning if speed limit exceeded (Google doesn't have this, Waze does as does my stand alone #TomTom
