Lockhart, an ideal layover spot between San Antonio & KC, Mo., became a rest stop for cowboys driving cattle on the Chisholm Trail, many of whom were Black or Hispanic. These cowboys’ taste for the flavors of charcoal & barbacoa stoked the region’s appetite for smoked meat.

So I am a typical Millennial and loved #HarryPotter back in the day. One thing I never understood why the #Weasley's did not re-use the old books.... Or even shared them in the same year. In #ChamberOfSecrets why did they need 5 copies of #Lockhart's books... The 3 Generations would never have the same subject at the same time...

This book I found in a charity shop provides great context to #Lockhart's memoirs of the #Union and the people involved.
The 4th Duke of Hamilton was a right two-faced slimeball. He had a legitimate claim to the throne of #Scotland, but when he realised no-one would support it he decided the Union was his next best option (lots of land in England). He betrayed his Jacobite friends many times over but managed to keep stringing them along.
"Did not the Earl of Ilay in all companies make it his publick and constant toast, and write inscriptions on the glasses in the taverns of Edinburgh, 'To the dissolving of the Union'?
Did not all the Scots members, Whigs as well as Tories, agree unanimously to the motion which was made in the House of Lords for dissolving it?"
Our Precious Union has always been a political prison.

Crazy story from #Lockhart's memoirs:
Simon Frazer of Beaufort was sentenced to death for raping the sister of the Duke of Athol. He fled to France where he inveigled money out of the French king and got James 'VIII' the Old Pretender to make him a major general, then returned to #Scotland with a free pass from the Duke of Queensberry (working for England) so he could go around trying to implicate people in a Jacobite plot when there wasn't one. He ended up in the #Bastille.

The Scottish Commissioners who negotiated the Treaty of Union were all appointed by London. #Lockhart of #Carnwath was the only one opposed to it. When he got into Westminster he uncovered the intimidation and bribery that had gone on, and tried to get the Act of Union repealed.
His memoirs could have got him killed when they leaked. He did time in jail for fomenting violence and died from injuries sustained in a duel.

It was something like a visitor came to see Scott, and saw the author himself through a window, but only saw his hand (writing)?
