@enocc @doctorambient

www.lowendbox.com and it's forum at www.lowendtalk.com are fertile hunting-grounds for cheap hosting. Fair warning though, it's like buying your first domain name; can be addictive!

@glyph

Maybe a private VPN from a well regarded IP address block?

www.lowendtalk.com might be a good forum to ask about options if one were to consider such a route.

Greencloud, my favourite server provider who's not a giant, is making a 10th year anniversary campaign.

If you need a VPS or a place to tinker docker with, these guys' services, pricing and support (both pre and post-order era) are both great. lowendtalk.com/discussion/1893

Re.: easiest secure path to a blog that has as little reliance on third-party hosting as poss:

I may be lazy but ? #raspberryPi + #nextcloud (or your hardware and software of choice, but that one is a well trodden path so at least there are set up guides telling you how to keep it safely updated easily)

I'm sure someone has tried formatting an old mobile phone with a cracked screen and putting #postmarketOS (#Linux) on it and self-hosting via that, but I have yet to see a guide written for the meanest intelligence (I.E.: for me!), but type-c to RJ45 dongles are cheap, and it might be capable of providing built-in UPS.

If you prefer a #VPS and don't require anything too fancy, then #LowEndBox is a good place to start looking.

Good luck!

@Sir_Boops @chad Honestly, considering how much resources is required to support such a large community & the fact that #Mastodon is quite resource heavy, it's actually not too bad. #DigitalOcean is already a pretty good provider in terms of pricing for what you're getting (pricing seems to be in line with other providers like #Vultr, #OVH, #Hetzner and #Linode). If #mstdnca moved to a Tier 1 cloud provider like #MSAzure, #AWS, #GoogleCloud or #OracleCloud, it will likely cost way more than what #DigitalOcean has been charging.

I'm not sure if there are much cheaper alternatives that can provide the same level of service. Sure, you can definitely get a bunch of #VPS on the cheap, endless options can be found at #LowEndBox & #LowEndTalk but those #VPS have no guarantees and often are oversold, which could mean performance issues.

Maybe #S3 storage might be cheaper elsewhere like #Wasabi, #BackBlaze & #CloudFlare's new S3-compatible storage as they don't charge on data egress, but not sure how much the savings would be...

Cost & performance is always that eternal struggle.

@frederic @tchambers @Raspberry_Pi Yeah, I don't disagree.

I love #LowEndBox and had multiple vps' from providers there for years and years. Now, I've got a handful on #Linode (where my single user mastodon instance runs), as well as some stuff on a #kimsufi

after my last #lowendbox disappeared/deadpooled, i've been cooling my heels on setting up a new VPS to start supplanting my long long standing one.

when i went shopping last time- a little over a month ago- there was almost no ipv6 available. i can't believe how much ipv6 there is now! what changed?!

also there are TWO offers for NVMe on the front page! wow! the hardware isn't well specified but again what a sea change!!
