When thinking, the human brain performs a true masterpiece of information processing: around 100 billion #neurons communicate with each other via approximately 100 trillion connections. An international #research team, including scientists at #MPZPM, discovered that the mechanical properties of the developing brain influence both synapse formation and the emergence of electrical signals.

With optical diffraction tomography (ODT) scientists can quantify mass density distribution. The technique reveals details in each individual cell, such as nuclei, nucleoli, and mitochondria. Neighboring cells link ‘hands’ – their membranes and filopodia. Scientists at #MPZPM and #MPL have developed novel #microscopy techniques to study the mass density changes of cells under various conditions.

A look at the mechanics of the female reproductive tract

The female reproductive tract transports eggs and sperm, protects embryos, and renews tissue. Many processes involve mechanical forces, but little is known about their impact on reproduction and #WomensHealth.

Dr. Stephanie Möllmert’s new #research group at #MPZPM studies these forces to explore their role in fertilization, early development, and female health.

How dense is it inside living cells?

Cells are clearly structured units of life and packed to the brim with proteins, DNA, and organelles. A team of researchers from #MPZPM and @mpiib has now compared the ratio of nuclear and cytoplasmic density in different organisms and come to a surprising conclusion: the cell nucleus in eukaryotes is less dense than the rest of the cell. The results could be used as an indicator of cellular pathophysiology.

Neighborhood dispute among cells: Whoever successfully transmits force wins

Cells constantly compete, eliminating weaker ones to maintain tissue health. Researchers from #MPZPM, #InstitutJacquesMonod and #NielsBohrInstitute discovered a new strategy in mechanical cell competition: the ability to transmit force determines the winner. Their findings challenge classical views on #CellCompetition.
