Egyptian and Mongol cavalrymen clash

This sword had quite an adventure! Made in Italy, it was acquired by the Mamluke arsenal of Alexandria not long after 1370. After the Ottomans conquered Egypt it became property of the Sultan. In the early 20th century it was acquired by a collector, possibly Bashford Dean, and ended up in the Royal Ontario Museum as object 930.26.43. collections.rom.on.ca/objects/ #sword #materialCulture #archaeology #mamluk

🏛️ The Sultan Hassan Mosque (1356-1362) is a breathtaking Mamluk masterpiece in Cairo. Four madrasas, soaring minarets, and dazzling marble mihrab showcase Islamic architectural brilliance. Once even served as a fortress!

The image presents an expansive aerial view of Cairo's historic citadel, showcasing a blend of architectural styles from various periods. Prominently featured in the center is the iconic Muhammad Ali Mosque with its towering twin minarets and large dome; it stands as a testament to Ottoman influence on Egyptian architecture.

To the left, another mosque rises with distinctive red stripes winding up its slender structure, indicative of Mamluk design elements. The citadel walls themselves are formidable, stretching across much of the photo's bottom half, embodying medieval fortification techniques designed for defense against invasions.

The surrounding landscape is sparse but dotted with smaller structures and what appears to be a ship in water below, hinting at Cairo’s proximity to a body of water, likely part of its historical trade routes. The overall color tone suggests the image has been aged or altered to resemble vintage photographs from around 1890-1910.

The title "Kairo, la Citadelle Zürich" might imply an alternative name for Cairo in French and a possible connection with Zurich, which could be related to historical contexts of cultural exchanges during that era.

1260 - The Mongol expansion had reached the Middle East, and their power enabled them to crush the established states up to the Holy Land. The Holy Land was being claimed by an Egyptian Dynasty with Turkic origins, and as such, would also have mastery of horsemanship and archery. Would the Mongols meet their match?
