A stone guidepost, probably late 19th century? About 1 m high, and set into the roadside verge high on the hills near the Don/Calder watershed in Yorkshire. The guidepost is mostly painted white, although the bottom quarter or so is black. Stylized manicules (pointing hands) have been cut into the two visible faces and picked out in black paint. From here we can go to Farnley, Fulstone, Holmfirth, Shelley or Shepley (the last being indicated in two different directions). Rather sweetly these ?Victorian manicules are three-fingered, like cartoonists would draw.

Detail of a leaf in a medieval manuscript: folio 128 recto in Cambridge, University Library, Manuscript Ll.4.18. Visible is the start of 9 lines of Latin text copied in dark brown ink, the 1st and 8th lines opening with pilcrows or paragraph marks added in red ink, the 5th line opening with another pilcrow added in blue ink. Above all this, in the topmost margin of the leaf, someone has sketched a manicule—a pointing hand or glove typically used to draw attention to a passage—in black ink. This manicule takes the shape of a glove pointing down towards the text with thumb and index finger. The back of the glove is ornamented with a pattern probably intended to represent a flower, but resembling a cluster of 4 eyes.
