Recently finished Metroid Prime 4 on the original Switch and I was very impressed by how great it looks. Fantastic game. đź‘Ť #gaming #metroid
Not to diss it too hard, but #Metroid Prime 4 is the first time I have seen a series add an "open world" segment (the big sand pit) while becoming more linear than most prior entries.
It is not terrible, but it does not come close to how well, say, God of War converted itself to being more open. Kinda feels like they put up a big map and just kind of gave up at some point, realizing metroid gameplay cannot really function there. So it's just. Sand.

I am still slowly making my way through Metroid Prime on the Wii, and I am still impressed with the motion controls. It can be a little finicky, and I can't play for long periods since it can be a little uncomfortable to point the Wiimote directly at the TV, and the nunchuck is just a little undersized for my hand. Still very much enjoying it, and realizing I don't remember amything from when I played it last in 2002/2003 🤣

Getting lost in Metroid games can be particularly frustrating since the enemies respawn frequently and getting from point A to point B can take a while. I feel like a fast travel system between save points or something would have been very welcome, though it probably would have ruined the pacing.
Low point is getting lost. It's a problem I encounter frequently when playing Metroid games. Dread does a decent job of telegraphing which way you're supposed to go, but the in-game map is pretty bare bones compared to the complexity of the space. I've been using walkthroughs judiciously to help me find my way if I get too lost.
Highlight of Metroid Dread is definitely the boss battles. They're challenging enough to be fun without being punishingly difficult.
The only mainline game I've beaten is Fusion and I'm currently making my way through Dread. I've played some of Zero Mission and Super Metroid but never beaten them.
I think after beating Dread, it is a reasonable goal to play through every mainline Metroid game. I'll probably choose to play the remakes where available. Looking forward to it!
There are a ton of Metroid games, but when you consolidate the remakes and strip out the spin-offs and side series (including the Prime games), you're left with 5 mainline entries:
- Metroid (NES)/Zero Mission (GBA)
- Metroid 2 (GB)/Samus Returns (3DS)
- Super Metroid (SNES)
- Metroid Fusion (GBA)
- Metroid Dread (Switch)
