In case you were wondering, a 1Hz LFO is 105.38 half steps (262 cents shy of 9 octaves) below concert A. That makes the LFO 12 cents sharp of C half-flat (assuming 24EDO tuned to A440).

log_2 440 × 12 = 105.38

I felt like listening to some Javanese gamelan.
Gamelan has 2 tuning systems, sléndro and Pelog. Fun fact, if you can't remember which has 5 notes and which 7, count the letters and you'll know the wrong answer! Each gamelan set has a unique tuning, so although people have tried to define sléndro as near-5TET and Pelog as near-9TET with 2 skipped pitches, this doesn't really work without a perfect octave.

Ended Saturday and started Sunday with Like a Great River
by Oded Tzur, released on Enja in 2015.

"In 2012, Oded led a rehearsal in Brooklyn with Shai Maestro, Petros Klampanis and Ziv Ravitz. The immediate connection between the four musicians led to the creation of the Oded Tzur Quartet, an ensemble that explores relationships between the jazz setting and Indian music’s melodic architecture. The Quartet has performed at many venues throughout New York City and in 2014 recorded its debut album: Like a Great River, which will be released by Enja Records in April 2015.
Oded Tzur is a New York City based saxophonist, composer and bandleader. His work draws on Indian classical music and Jazz, and explores fundamental connections between different musical traditions..." - Bandcamp

Outkast's Hey Ya in 31TET, at half-speed and ambient? In this video Levi McClain talks about his compositional approach, including some great insights into #Microtonal #MusicTheory.
Personally I'm not too familiar with 31TET, preferring 36 or 53TET, which I mainly use in the context of Turkish makam theory. Even so, his harmony approach sounds perfectly functional to my ears, though if you're not used to #microtonality this probably will sound weird/eerie. #Music

Stumbled across this just now. A solo piece called the "sound of monk" played by Li Wenxing on 三弦 (sānxián); a family of three-stringed fretless long-necked lutes, usually around 90-120cm total length (3-4ft) and the soundbox covered with python skin on both front and back. This 78RPM recording is from the mid-20th century. Particularly striking are the slides and consistent scale with #Microtonality in the second half.

Well, have a little #Ethnomusicology rant, touching on #microtonality and misrepresentation, based on stuff I come across often, and it annoys me. #Music #MusicTheory #Musicology
Let's start with a question: How often do you come across people talking about Hijaz as the Egyptian or Arabic/Arabian scale? Seems to me, all the bloody time! (1/11)

Fans of #music that is #improvised and has a soupçon of #microtonality or, dare I say, a dash of #maqqamat and or #EAI and... well you get the idea.

Radio sessions by me from last year. I haven't actually put any music online for eight years, it transpires, so bear that in mind or not (to taste).

#introduction

Hello everyone, I am Diego (aka videco)! I love making music with code and also with other instruments (#electricguitar, #drums, #lumatone).

Among the music projects where I participate, probably the most relevant for this server is Pirarán, a networked ensemble.

My favorite coding tool/language is #overtone (#clojure) for which I've developed libraries related to #microtonality and #polytemporality, as well as a port of #tidalcycles called #piratidal. I also like #tidalcycles #supercollider and #hydra.

Conceptually one of my primary motivators is exploring creativity as a natural phenomena. I do so by conceiving thought/imagination as an ecosystem where different ideas get to co-evolve, and so, I try to think of the projects I work on as part of a network of relations and the products, not as things in themselves, but as parts of a bigger whole. Consequently I place great emphasis on #collaboration as diversity is most important to maintain the dynamic equilibrium of ecosystems and to keep them healthy and lively. As part of all that #chaostheory, #systemstheory, #ecology and #anarchy are also things that interest me.

You can find more information on the music at echoic.space

A #musicTheory soapbox moment…
Just been thinking about how we define #microtonality: notes that fall outside of the tonal framework.
But in that case, 17, 24, 31, 36, 53, 72 TET or any other system of #MusicalTemperament isn't #microtonal, because all the pitches are defined, whereas in 12TET a neutral 2nd would stand out as “falling outside the framework”, which does make it microtonal. Relating everything to Western 12TET, which isn't perfect, is problematic IMHO.

after 3y of development i'm happy that i finally wrote a basic introduction to mutwo, a small generic ecosystem for #music, #composition, #algorithmicart & #algorithmicComposition that supports #microtonality, #notation via #lilypond, #midi export & import and #csound render. take a look at it at mutwo-org.github.io/ :)
