The forests of the Amazon region feature a great diversity of native fig trees (Ficus spp.), many of them hemiepiphytes ("strangler figs"). The accessory fruits (syconium: a fleshy, globose and hollow inflorescence with tiny flowers and fruits on the inside) are an important food source for various animals. When this Ficus amazonica (Miq.) Miq. is producing its small figs, the birds (like this Euphonia violaceae) are feasting on them for several weeks.

Ostiolar bracts of a fig syconium. It's a squeeze, but this is the way in and out for the tiny wasps that do the pollinating. The ostiole is also where the volatiles that attract the wasps are released. #fig #Ficus #wasps #botany #Moraceae #fruit #entomology #Hymenoptera #nature
Jackfruit (Artocarpus heterophyllus). These are becoming quite common at grocery stores in the United States and I'm wondering whether they are imported from #Brazil, where the tree is highly invasive and the fruit is not particularly popular. I love it, plus it's good fun to watch other shoppers' faces when they see it in my cart. #Moraceae #botany #fruit #plants #InvasiveSpecies
