I’m very excited to be headed to Portland for #esa2023 If anyone would like to meet up for coffee or a meal and chat #mutualisms #CommunityEcology #syntheticEcology #PUIs or really anything

This weeks #MutualismsOnMain is an interaction that first got me interested in mutualisms! Ant-acacia mutualisms are a protection type interaction where the ant provides the plant with defense against herbivory while the plant provides a home and usually some food. These mutualisms are powerful—in some cases vastly shaping forest structure and communities! 📸 flickr.com/photos/kafka4prez shared under creativecommons.org/licenses/b

Acacia leaf with beltain bodies (small white rice shaped structures at the tips of leaflets) is being held to the camera by a hand. At the base of the leaf a large thorn domatia where ants live has been made by the plant.

I’m going to post a regular series highlighting different #mutualisms each week. In this weeks #MutualismsOnMain let’s meet a fungal group I’m so enamored with right now. Epichloë are endophytes living in grass hosts. They provide the plant with protection from herbivores by producing a range of intense alkaloids. One neat feature of this microbe: vertical transmission! Plants can pass down their epichloë to their offspring.

A microscopic image of several grass cells stained light blue. Running through several of the cells is a thin dark blue squiggly line which is the endophytic fungi living within the plant

Hi! I’m a #queer postdoc working on multispecies #mutualisms and all things #community #ecology. I’m building synthetic mutualistic networks with plants and AMF fungi 🍀🍄 The other half of my work relates to increasing #belongingness and #inclusivity in #STEM, currently starting a living learning community for 1st-yr bio students from under resourced backgrounds. I’m excited to build community here!
Will toot(!?) about mutualisms, inclusive pedagogy & centering diverse voices
