#Mutualisms within light microhabitats are associated with sensory convergence in a mimetic butterfly community https://www.pnas.org/doi/10.1073/pnas.2422397122
"distantly related species living in the same pockets of #rainforest light have evolved remarkably similar visual systems... & butterflies that mimic each other's warning colours tend to live in the same lighting environments, likely enhancing their shared warning signal to predators"

Iām very excited to be headed to Portland for #esa2023 If anyone would like to meet up for coffee or a meal and chat #mutualisms #CommunityEcology #syntheticEcology #PUIs or really anything
Hello, my name is Otti and I am a lecturer at Newcastle university (UK). My research is in the #biophysics and #mathbiology of #microbes (#mathmodelling & #experiment). I have a particular interest in swimming microalgae and bacteria (#microswimmers) with application to sustainable #biotechnology. I have also worked on algal-bacterial #mutualisms between #soil species. I teach #mathematics to #engineering students, and am interested in #maths, #physics and #science #education and #outreach.
This weeks #MutualismsOnMain is an interaction that first got me interested in mutualisms! Ant-acacia mutualisms are a protection type interaction where the ant provides the plant with defense against herbivory while the plant provides a home and usually some food. These mutualisms are powerfulāin some cases vastly shaping forest structure and communities! šø https://www.flickr.com/photos/kafka4prez shared under https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/2.0

Iām going to post a regular series highlighting different #mutualisms each week. In this weeks #MutualismsOnMain letās meet a fungal group Iām so enamored with right now. EpichloĆ« are endophytes living in grass hosts. They provide the plant with protection from herbivores by producing a range of intense alkaloids. One neat feature of this microbe: vertical transmission! Plants can pass down their epichloĆ« to their offspring.
Hi! Iām a #queer postdoc working on multispecies #mutualisms and all things #community #ecology. Iām building synthetic mutualistic networks with plants and AMF fungi šš The other half of my work relates to increasing #belongingness and #inclusivity in #STEM, currently starting a living learning community for 1st-yr bio students from under resourced backgrounds. Iām excited to build community here!
Will toot(!?) about mutualisms, inclusive pedagogy & centering diverse voices
