Just read this 1929 novel by American author Nella Larsen. The story centers on the reunion of two childhood friends + the discovery that one is 'passing' in a mixed race marriage.

Born in Chicago, Larsen was part of the Harlem Renaissance of the 20s + 30s. She wrote 2 novels during this time.

A film adaption of the novel was made in 2021 by Rebecca Hall.

Finished reading this 1962 novel by James Baldwin and it has found a place among my favorite titles of all time - including Midaq Alley by Naguib Mahfouz, A Suitable Boy by Vikram Seth, The Blood of Others and The Mandarins, both by Simone de Beauvoir and The Children of Violence Series by Doris Lessing ... The thread that I find binds these works is a collection of characters who are fully realized by the authors and are making decisions amid the turmoil of their given times and environment, based on their individual traits, rather than simply as a vehicle for a story the writer wants to tell.

Just finished reading Torrents of Spring the 1872 novella by Ivan Turgenev. It is partly autobiographical, centering on a young Russian landowner who falls in love for the first time while visiting the German city of Frankfurt.

Finished #reading the fascinating #novella #TheDaylighGate, #author #JeanetteWinterson's retelling of the #PendleWitchTrials of 1612 in England, when 12 men + women were charged with the murders of 10 people by the use of #witchcraft. Winterson reimagines this world adding passion + magic to the sad + tragic events of that time.

I just finished Giovanni's Room and it has found a space on my favorite books of all time list. Perhaps I should have read this novel 40 years ago when I was in my mid 20s - but I'm not at all upset that I only discovered it now. 📚 I just finished By the Sea - a novel by Nobel Prize winning author Abdulrazak Gurnah, first published in 2001. It is the Zanzibar born writer's sixth novel and was longlisted for the Booker Prize.

By the Sea is a complex tale narrated by two men who have immigrated to Britain. As they reveal their individual stories the reader sees how their lives have been deeply and tragically connected. Not an easy read , but for me well worth the effort. 📚

📖 Tevye the Dairyman & Motl the Cantor's Son 📚

As a big fan of Fiddler on the Roof, I decided I should read the original Tevye stories. First published in 1894, Tevye 'tells' Aleichem the tales of his family, focusing on six of his seven daughters, Tzeitel, Chava, Hodel, Shprintze, Taybele, and Bielke. I was surprised by how different these tales proved to be from musical.
But the highlight here is the delightful adventures of the 'orphan' Motl in Aleichem's unfinished novel Motl and the Cantor's Son. These tales take us on the journey from poverty in the Shtetl, across Europe to the promise land of America. Motls' take on life is endearing and funny. I am amazed that these stories have never made it to film!

📚 📚 Finished OE Rölvaag's Giants in the Earth - The Norwegian American author's novel on pioneer life in the Dakota Territory based on the experiences of his, and his wife's own families.
This book was absolutely dependent on the last few pages as to how I would feel about it ... For me, almost any other ending would have left me frustrated by the journey the story took. 📚📚

I just completed the first in the four part series of novels by Vilhelm Moberg (1898-1973) - The Emigrants - written between 1949 and 1959, that describes a Swedish family's emigration to Minnesota in the mid-19th century. A fantastic book.

The novels have been interpreted to film a few times - The Emigrants (based on the first two novels) and The New Land (based on the second two), both starring Max von Sydow and Liv Ullmann, directed by Jan Troell in 1971-2 and more recently in 2021, a film by Erik Poppe starring Gustaf Skarsgård and Lisa Carlehed.

Moberg committed suicide by drowning himself in a lake outside his house. He left a note to his wife saying: "The time is twenty past seven; I go to seek in the lake the eternal sleep. Forgive me, I could not endure."

As a young child growing up in Virginia, Willa Cather heard her family telling and retelling a story about a young enslaved woman who made her way to Canada with the help of the slave owner’s abolitionist daughter. Sapphira and the Slave Girl was Cather’s final novel, published in 1940, and based and that story she overheard as a child.

Cather, who won the Pulitzer Prize for her novel One of Our Own in 1923, passed away in 1947 at the age of 73.
