How decoders are addressed confuses many. Multifunction decoders have 2 modes: Primary & Extended. Accessory decoders have 9 or 11 bit addresses. Not confusing at all.😀

A number of command control systems have appeared for #modelrailroads over the years.

None were overly successful as incompatibility was the rule. The #NMRA would eventually create a standardized system called "Digital Command Control" in 1993.

DCC: An acronym for Digital Command Control, a standard created by the #NMRA

DCC controls locomotives, therefore trains, in a more realistic fashion than a rheostat.

- Permits multiple locomotives to operate independently on a layout.
- A locomotive's headlight, ditch lights, &, other functions to be operated interactively.
- Allow multiple locomotives to operate cooperatively

Layout Command Control

An adjunct to Digital Command Control, & an #NMRA Standard. Provides a bus for auxiliary functions, reducing load on the throttle network.

LCC does not require a computer to operate!

There are several ways of measuring the voltage on the track with Digital Command Control.

Its nature means measurements may not reflect reality, and how the measurement is made is important.

Digital multimeters often give misleading results due to how they actually measure the voltage.

Making a #Digitrax #LocoNet cable.

It is critical that the type of RJ connectors match the type of wire it will be crimped on to. Stranded wire needs a plug meant for stranded wire.

Plus a good set of crimpers. Cheap ones often don't work well.

In the early years of Digital Command Control the #NMRA small, medium & large connectors appeared.

Today they are obsolete, replaced by modern connectors with more contact points.

Short Circuits & DCC:

Short circuits are bad in any instance. With #digitalcommandcontrol, boosters supply a lot of current, so a short is a very bad thing.

Most boosters use "rate of change." A sudden spike triggers the protection circuit. Therefore a short can occur, but the booster cannot see it.

With energy storage in multiple vehicles a false trigger is possible.

Wring a #ModelRailway for #NMRA Digital Command Control isn't difficult.

The basics:
1. It is not analog Direct Current so the rules are different.

Actually the wiring is much more straightforward, only a heavier gauge of wire is required. Reverse loops must be accommodated. Some turnouts may cause issues.

Outside of that, it is a lot easier than the old DC Block systems of yesteryear.

Quick Guide to #NMRADCC Consisting:

Basic: Multifunction Decoders share a Primary or Extended Address.

Advanced: Consist Address created by command station and written to CV19 in each multifunction decoder in the consist.

Command Station: Consist managed by the command station. It keeps track of which locomotives are part of the consist.

Flux makes soldering tasks easier. Particularly when you have old solder, where the flux is not as effective.

Not only is flux important, the correct flux is very important. Many use acid based fluxes for electrical and electronic work. Which is a big mistake.

An optional DCC configuration value is CV11, Packet Timeout.

It determines how long a multifunction decoder will wait until stopping when not receiving valid data packets.

Being optional, some manufacturers may use CV11 for other purposes.

Digital Command Control supports automated braking, in several forms. It is important to note that the multifunction decoder must support this feature.

One of the simplest to implement is Asymmetric DCC. Five low cost diodes and it's done.
