back in the early 90s, it was very difficult to find a means for connecting to the internet.

for the very few who did have (pre-www) internet access, it was via their university or (much less likely) through a large corporation.

and then, in october of 1994, a local nonprofit started Edmonton FreeNet: for $25 per year, you got an e-mail address, usenet access, shell access to lynx and pine, and 1mb of file storage

i hung on to my account so i'd always have access to a shell no matter where I was in the world. my friends used it as a cheap ISP for years; they would eventually add SLIP/PPP.

i always wondered how the freenet initiative got started - and learned recently that it was all thanks to the NPTN Blue Book: a National Public Telecomputing Network that distributed a software package called FreePort, containing all of the sub-modules necessary to delivery dial-up access to a small community.

the whole NTPN concept itself was way ahead of its time, and i'd love to read a book on it some day.

for the time being, i'm overjoyed to see that there have been many articles written on freenets, and @ernie's is one of the best:

Good news! My H4TU-C card has been delivered!

... bad news: it was delivered to the wrong address, about 5 states away.

Making up for it short term with updating the firmware on our TA908, which is only about 6 major versions out of date, and then we're gonna see about linking it somewhere.

Then, maybe, set up the 908 to be a SIP-TDM gateway and tie the IP Office to it? Egress through @eventphone 's EPVPN until I get my act together?

I know I asked this a while back, but I'm stubbornly going to keep at it.

There are more than a few entities on fedi that are into standing up old phone networks, ranging from military field comms, business PBXes, even homelab ESS implementations.

But I can't find a dedicated hashtag for the life of me, so I'm going to pick one and run with it.

#OtherNetworks is a great catch-all for the more esoteric, #RetroLab is broad but you get the idea, and #HomeLab is *really* broad.

On the other hand, single- and dual- card enclosures for the modern high-density stuff don't exist. Not like they're not available on the market -- they were never made. That would be sorta silly for a high-density product.

There could be a market* for that.

And by market* I mean a very small number of #retrolab #othernetworks #phone nerds who might like to 3D print this shit or something.

Reappropriated a Total Access 908 from a site prep job. This thing is surprisingly versatile.

Its got SIP, T1/DSX, POTS. It's got FXS. Its got fuckoff big amphenol connectors. Its got an onboard ring generator. You want a branch office LAN over T1, you got it. Want to SIP on ISDN? No problem. Want to play whose who with ANI and DNIS? Hell yeah, brother.

Still no pulse dial though.

I just got my license earlier this year, inspired by the role hams played in the Hurricane Helene mutual aid disaster relief and by @mediaarchaeologylab's writings about #othernetworks and radio.

Right now I'm studying for my general license, reading about #sdr, and learning what there is to learn.

A question for the #streamer folk: If you're planning on streaming some content that's out of line with your typical content, do you set up a second 'channel?'

Interested in perspectives for and against splitting topics across channels.

Context: Usually I stream video games at @stream, but am looking at streaming some #HomeLab and #OtherNetworks type content, and maybe some #AmateurRadio #POTA activations.
