The front wheels are driven by an electric motor, with the combustion engine optionally driving the generator at optimum rpm to generate power for charging and the rear electric motor.

But there's also a multi-plate clutch that can engage above a certain wheel speed, matching engine rpm and directly connecting the engine to the front wheels _together_ with the electric motor boosting torque as needed. While generating power for the rear wheels/battery.

@VQuaschning #PHEV sind aber wegen der Gleichstellung mit BEVs bei Dienstwagenregelung eine gute Möglichkeit, den Absatz hochwertiger Verbrennungsmotoren zu sichern. Deshalb macht man das ja; für die Edge Cases, wo ein PHEV wirklich sinnvoller wären, lohnt sich keine gesetzliche Regelung.
