Finally remembered to boot an old snapshot (hurrah for #BTRFS and #openSUSE!) and… yeah, the font rendering DEFINITELY went wrong somewhere during the update on Friday evening!

Firefox and Thunderbird still look okay. So it must be a Gnome/GTK/Pango change that's causing this weird rendering.

And, oddly, window titles don't appear to have been impacted. Which seems odd. I don't know if that localises it? But I thought GTK4 apps were starting to render their own title bar 😕

ImageMagick + Pango + Babashka = ♥️

If you want to conveniently compose pictures and text programmatically you may want to have a look at ImageMagick. Especially when powered by Pango markup. The markup is SGML and the resulting text line breaks and flows automatically.

Does anyone have a #truetype conversion of the 6x13 Misc Fixed font?

Any other fonts drive me insane, and because of the ridiculously awful #Pango update a while ago which removed support for #bitmap #fonts, I can't use it.

Why do I care now? Because I've been drinking less so instead of being drunk all the time and not really caring, I'm actually focusing. And I despise every font I've tried. I'm done programming and typing anything meaningful on Linux until I can use the font in some way.

Been comparing APIs for reworking the text support in #GIMP - currently uses #Pango; some font names come out wrong, no "use this font file" support. But can maybe work around both things (thanks, Behdad's blog) and add COLR support too, by rewriting fonts on the fly.

GTK folks: do you know of a way (or "the right way") to know if my app/a widget is actually *using* the font specified? For example, if my CSS says to use font "Foo," but that font isn't installed?

I poked a little bit at PangoFontDescription but it looks like it will return the requested font description for the context and not actually what's being used.

Allwinner is a difficult company to work with as a SME or hobbyists (as do most Chinese chip manufacturers, although #UniIC and #Pango seemed like quite an exception but they all have the same parent company that has a strong #academic background)
