A major bridge in #Baltimore collapsed after being hit by a #freighter at about 1:30AM Tuesday, sending at least 8 people from a construction crew into the water as a large section of the #bridge crashed into the #PatapscoRiver. Rescuers are using infra-red and sonar to locate people in the #PatapscoRiver. They have sighted an unspecified number of vehicles in the 48°F / 9°C water.

Two people were pulled alive from the water early on. One is in critical condition, the other was able to refuse medical care and walk away. There are at least seven fatalities.

Officials have confirmed there were workers doing maintenance on the deck of the bridge, but their work would not have affected this event. Officials are still trying to account for all of the bridge workers.

The crew on the ship are confirmed uninjured.

UNCONFIRMED: Prior to crashing into the pylon, the massive cargo ship is reported to have been experiencing electrical issues. Video shows that lights on the ship flickered before it hit the #FrancisScottKeyBridge, and the power was reportedly off when it hit the bridge. Officials have not confirmed if this caused the impact.
