I'm going to be dropping off the edge of the map for a while so for all those people who do seem to like my bird pictures don't worry - I'll be back soon. But I'll leave you with something a bit different. This is Maratus Speciosus or the Coastal Peacock Spider. There are actually a LOT of them if you take the time to look in exactly the right plants for the month or so that they are brightly coloured like this. This is a male displaying - sadly to a female who was already well and truly knocked up (judging by the size of her belly!) and he chickened out and ran away after a few tenuous tail wiggles. The females do eat the males if they don't dance well enough. #spiders #macro #peacockspider

A peacock spider displaying. His palps (leg like things) are sticking up and his gorgeous iridescent abdomen is lifted to show the peacock feather like colouring.

Discover why these gorgeous spiders have such great dancing skills… ausgeo.co/peacockspider

We aren’t biased when we say Australia’s peacock spiders are the most attractive of the world’s more than 5000 jumping spider species!

At a tiny 4–6mm long, they stand out with their miniature size, large eyes and, of course, dazzling opisthosomal fans.

This month #InsertAnInvert2024 is about relationships, starting with courtship. I know some aren’t fond of spiders, but how can you resist the aptly named colourful Australian Coastal Peacock Spider, Maratus Speciosus? Not only, like the name suggests, do peacock spiders have vivid, patterned, multicolour abdomens (& that round opisthosomal plate) but the males lift it & shake it, along with their 3rd pair of legs, 🧵

My linocut peacock spider mid-mating dance is one of an edition of 18, printed in browns, blue, turquoise, and orange on white handmade Japanese kozo (or mulberry) paper, 8” x 8” (or 20.3 cm by 20.3 cm). It has brown furry looking legs with white spots and ends, a row of four bright turquoise eyes, two raised legs on either side and a dramatic raised abdomen in a pattern of orange and dark cyan with brown polka dots.
