Puppet Village

As younger people have moved away for jobs or education in the small Japanese village of Ichinono, the 60 or so remaining residents have turned to life sized mannequins to populate the town + make it feel less lonely ...

Pride Walk – Roze Maandag, Tilburg Kermis (Part 4)
“Born This Way”

In a world where being yourself isn’t always safe, accepted, or even allowed, Pride Walks like this one matter more than ever. They offer visibility, solidarity, and celebration to those whose identities are often silenced.

I’m proud to live in a country where we embrace the beauty of diversity — where no matter your skin color, body type, religion, or heritage, your identity deserves respect and joy. Pride is not just for the LGBTQIA+ community; it is for everyone who believes in freedom of expression and equality. Even if you’re straight — you’re welcome to walk, support, learn, and celebrate. That’s how we build inclusive societies: together.

The portraits in this post — taken with my Canon 5D Mark III and Sigma 100–400mm lens — capture just a few of the powerful, beautiful individuals who walked with pride, dignity, and color. The wide shots, from my Canon 7D Mark II and 15–85mm lens, show just how many hearts and banners filled the streets. And yes, the city was awash in pink — and it was perfect.

Because no one should ever have to hide who they are.

Pride Walk – Roze Maandag, Tilburg Kermis (Part 3)
“Don’t Be a Drag, Just Be a Queen”

As Lady Gaga sang it — and these queens lived it — the Pride Walk in Tilburg gave center stage to the art, power, and flamboyant joy of drag.

These photos are a tribute to the performers who graced the streets in towering heels, layers of glitter, and personalities even bigger than their wigs. Some looks were polished to perfection, others wonderfully over-the-top — but each one was a bold, beautiful statement of visibility and celebration.

Drag is not just entertainment — it's protest, expression, performance, and empowerment. It challenges norms, flips gender expectations, and radiates self-love in every shimmering sequin. As I weaved through the crowd (without bumping a soul, thank you very much 😄), I couldn’t help but feel both admiration and awe for these living works of art.

Shot with my Canon 5D Mark III and Sigma 100–400mm lens, I tried to capture the poise, humor, and pure joy that these queens brought to Roze Maandag. From confident poses to spontaneous laughter — this was Pride in motion.

Because in a world that often tries to dull our shine, drag reminds us: it’s okay to take up space, to be seen, and to be fabulous doing it.

Pride Walk – Roze Maandag, Tilburg Kermis (Part 2)
Young and Old, With Smiles and Pride

Part 2 of my Roze Maandag series brings you into the heart of the Pride Walk — a moving celebration of love, visibility, and community that began at Tilburg Central Station.

Though the official start was at 14:00, the first participants arrived hours earlier, ready to make their presence known. As the parade began to move through the city, so did I — sprinting ahead again and again to capture fresh angles (seven times in total, with 12.5 kg on my back and two cameras strapped to my front… safe to say, I felt it in my legs later).

In this set, you’ll find a wide-angle shot showing the sheer scale of the event — a long, beautiful river of rainbow flags and waving hands. One photo captures three generations of women — young, middle-aged, and elderly — each radiating pride in her own way. Along the route, bystanders paused, smiled, clapped, or stood in amazed silence. Even those not walking became part of the moment.

Pride is not just for the young or for one group — it's for everyone who believes in dignity, visibility, and love without conditions. That message walked right through the streets of Tilburg yesterday.

Pride Walk – Roze Maandag, Tilburg Kermis (Part 1)

Yesterday, I attended the Pride Walk during Roze Maandag at the Tilburgse Kermis — a celebration of love, freedom, and being unapologetically yourself. Roze Maandag is more than just a day of pink and glitter. It’s a statement: you are welcome here, whoever you are.

This is part one of a five-part series covering the event. Today’s photos, taken with my Canon 5D Mark III and Sigma 100–400mm lens, offer a gentle start — portraits of energy, color, and connection. You’ll see a lot of pink, yes — it’s tradition after all — but also strength, joy, and humanity in motion.

Events like these are important. They give visibility to the LGBTQ+ community and celebrate the right to exist freely in public space — something still not guaranteed everywhere. Photography can help document that presence. A camera becomes both witness and amplifier.

More is coming — each post a bit louder, bolder, and more full of sparkle. For now, I hope you enjoy this first look through my lens.

a series from the recent #NoKings march in #PDX. we didn’t have any squeaky tanks, but we did have about 50,000 people rallying in solidarity with 7 million more in cities across the country.

A large crowd of people marches across the Hawthorne Bridge in Portland, Oregon, under a clear sky. Many hold signs with various messages, some visible, like "NO KINGS!" in the foreground. The bridge stretches into the background, packed with more participants, and the office buildings lining Naito Parkway in downtown Portland are visible on either side of the bridge in the distance. Some trees line the riverbanks. The march appears to be busy and well-attended.A large papier-mâché figure of Donald Trump in a blue suit and red tie hangs from a pole, grasping at a crown suspended on a wire just out of his reach. Above him, a sign reads "NO KINGS IN AMERICA". The figure is positioned above a crowd of protestors at the No Kings rally and march in Portland, OR, and in the background, the mast of the USS Oregon memorial is visible, along with green trees and more American flags.A large crowd marches at the No Kings rally and march in Portland, OR, with a prominent oversized puppet of a figure resembling Donald Trump in a suit and red tie at the center. The puppet has an exaggerated, open-mouthed expression and a cheap looking burger king crown. Surrounding the puppet are many protestors holding signs, including one that reads "HISTORY WILL NOT BE KIND TO TREASONOUS COLLABORATORS" with an image of Donald Trump high-stepping in military dress. Another sign partially visible says "SMASH ICE NO DEPORTATIONS."A large crowd of people gathers for the No Kings rally and march in Portland, OR, with many holding American flags and various signs.

[field note, Longwy, week 10]. A trip near the blast furnace

On my way to the golf course to take photo of the blast furnace, I made a diversion via the Chemin de la Senelle (named after one of the 4 steelworks). I stayed there for three hours. Little by little, as if picking champions, I discovered many of the remains of this factory. I thought everything had been wiped out, razed to the ground, but in fact the remains overflow and stretch for at least 1 kilometre. I discovered a new path. I'd been there once before, so I don't know how I missed it. I can't wait to go back, this time with a working camera (I realised my lens was broken on the way).

I spent part of my childhood in a slump in the city of Yogyakarta, Indonesia. I knew that some of my neighbours worked at the train station, but they were not working for the railroad company.
The Yogyakarta Tugu train station area was once famous for its cheap prostitution. There was a slang word for it: "nge-bong", short for "ngenthu mburi gerbong". It's javanese for "having sex behind a train waggon". Usually in a small room or semi-permanent shack, on old mattress, and no safety.

Some years later, as an aspiring journalist for my university's press, I wanted to tell the story of the night life around the train station.
A tranvestite friend allowed me follow her to see where she worked as a sex worker.
Right by the railtrack were many commercial sex workers, in dimly lit "coffee stalls" waiting for customers. Including transvestites there too.
I hung out with her, her colleagues and occasionally I snap some pictures with her guests.
My editor didn't want to publish the story at the end, she deemed the pictures were too vulgar for a university press.

Now the train station has been sterilized by the national railway company, and many of the night life workers have moved to other places.
