#PhotoLab

Think I'll be trying #DxO #PhotoLab sometime soon. My #CaptureOne 22 is aging and stuff seems to be breaking down. For example, when importing I want to exclude video files, but the filter options don't even work anymore :blobcatdunno:. Very weird.

Anyway, DxO communicates an Essential and an Elite version of Photolab and at dxo.com/dxo-photolab/whats-new they even have a comparison. At support.dxo.com/hc/en-us/artic they mention Essential as well.

Yet, when buying you can't choose between them? Confusing.

My wife stumbled across her dad's old Instamatic camera, and discovered it still had film in it, which we worked out has been in the camera since at least 1983. Found a local place that still develops 126 Kodacolor cartridges (Picture Perfect Photo Lab, Albuquerque), and not expecting much, took it in.

To my eye, the negatives are just a weird green with a few barely-visible streaks. But after digitizing and doing some heavy processing in Darktable and Gimp, I was able to get a identifiable image out of every frame.

Can't complain given the film was exposed over 40 years ago and has been sitting in the hot garage and who knows what other environments since then.

Digital photograph of a film negative exposed in 1983 and not developed until 2025. It's mostly a weird shade of green but a few very faint streaks indicate there may be an image. An image taken from the film negative after heavy post-processing reveals a girl standing on the steps of a porch, carrying a bag in each hand. The photo is blurred and contains lots of grain and noise, but is recognizable and even shows some color variations.

The petapixel article about the guy who didn't realize that his film had to be developed before he could see an image points to their film photography guide for the straight story:

It is about as bad as I've come to expect nowadays. Details follow.

Adding another photo from yesterday's ratsnake sighting. Excited to settle on DxO PhotoLab for editing!

#dxo #photolab #ratsnake #snake

Dark ratsnake with a few lighter gray spots and a light, whitish underbelly. Snake is curled up, head facing the camera, and eyes reflect the sky. Black forked tongue is visible. Background is a mix of light brown and light red river rocks, a few dried oak leaves, and some hedge trunks with a few green sprouts.

I get a lot out of reading Mastodon posts by my fellow #filmphotography fans, but some of it surprises me. For example, the apparently large number of #photolab workers who use stand development and/or very dilute developers to get a supercompensating effect. I know that Ansel recommends this kind of thing for very specific circumstances, but back in his day, very few other photographers actually did that; it can take all the life out of the mid-tones.

Last week I went back to the photo lab and told them I was so surprised by the rendering of the scan of my last film roll. They kindly agreed to give it another try and scanned the negative again. The second one was completely different. I happen to like them both! But it made me wonder how much control you lose when you delegate the processing and scanning of film. Unfortunately, I can't really afford to add a darkroom to my place, but maybe I could find a (simple?) way to do my own scanning?

Jetzt hab' ich sie alle durch... Kann ich #Adobe #Lightroom Foto-Abo (20 GB & Photoshop) für #UnplugTrump aufgeben?

Leider nein. :-(
