Residents sue Port Washington over city's use of TIF for $15 billion data center

A group of Ozaukee County residents has filed a lawsuit challenging the City of Port Washington's use of tax incremental financing (TIF) to support the massive data center project currently under construction on the city's north side.

Last month, Denver-based Vantage Data Centers began construction on a 670-acre campus that will be used by OpenAl and Oracle. The estimated $15 billion project is being supported through a city-created TIF district.

Last week, Great Lakes Neighbors Inc. (GLN) - a group that is also pursuing a recall of Port Washington Mayor Ted Neitzke - filed a complaint in Ozaukee County Circuit Court seeking to have the TIF district declared invalid and void.

According to city records, the city anticipates making total expenditures of approximately $458.6 million to undertake a variety of projects to support the data center development, mostly related to infrastructure improvements. The TIF district will reimburse the developer for about $175 million in up-front infrastructure projects, another $187 million in interest payments and about $91 million for a substation.
