Starting off my Sunday morning with another essential #90s classic.

This had never been released on vinyl in the U.S. (just a 1993 Europe pressing existed) until Jack White’s Third Man Records righted that awful wrong with this killer reissue.

“Lady In The Front Row”, “Jimmy’s Fantasy”, “Crazy World”, “After School Special”…. all absolute gems.

Although they had been at it a long while when this hit (they were teenagers when Born Innocent came out in ‘82!), this will always be my favorite Red Kross record.

Neurotica, Third Eye, Show World, everything else are ALL killer.

But they ain’t Phaseshifter.

WOW!!!
What a killer happy accident THIS was!

I bought this on a whim from a used bin today, simply because it looked super-interesting.
That’s a huge understatement.

ZOOM were a #protopunk band from #Toronto #canada in the late #70s , and this collection gathers their entire output as a band.

Sometimes they’re punk, other times straight up #glam (like on the title track), or even infectious #powerpop .

“Massacre At Central High” is a particular treat.

A few weeks ago, I posted an excellent record by a band called The Diodes.

Apparently, some parts of that band came from the defunct ZOOM.

THIS compilation is stellar, and o love finding bands that I’ve never heard of from that far back that I absolutely love.
A+++.

Ugly Pop is a great label. This might be the best thing that they’ve put out.

The Brian Jonestown Massacre - “Resist Much Obey Little” from Don't Get Lost (2017)

For years I’d heard #BrianJonestownMassacre here and there, mostly on college radio, and dug what I heard, but somehow an impression never stuck, if I’m being honest, until #AnthonyBourdain put founder/front man/driving force/connective tissue #AntonNewcombe in front of my eyeballs on his food/travelogue show #PartsUnknown.

Well thanks, Tony, for helping to correct that oversight. Newcombe excretes music from his pores, and puts out a record whenever he stops to collect this vital bodily fluid. #Shoegaze, #GarageRock, #PychedelicRock, jangly #PowerPop - Newcombe's oeuvre checks a lot of boxes, feeling a bit how I imagine it might be to walk through a car wash: Startling, seems fun at the start! Abrasive at times, chaotic but with a rhythm and a direction, keeps you moving, leaves you a little confused but cleansed.

As for this track - could there be a more appropriate time? But be careful out there, friends.

THIS is a killer record!

This was the very first compilation of Halifax underground bands ever recorded and released.
Thirteen curated songs that tell the story of what was happening in the musical underground of Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada in 1986.

A wonderful mix of great #powerpop #newwave #harcore and #indie music with some legitimate GREAT songs.

The album opener, “Love Don’t Wait” by Basic English, is a note-perfect #alternative power pop gem.

“Vietnam” by False Security is a tight, mean, and gnarly punk tune.

And a COOL surprise…

The October Game’s “Grind” is the VERY FIRST recorded appearance of soon-to-be superstar Sarah McLachlan. It’s a cool tune, and a much different vibe than what she’ll be known for a little further on down the road.

While post-A Boy Named Goo gets a little too poppy and syrupy, I really like early-to-mid #90s Goo Goo Dolls as a guilty pleasure. Very inspired by The Replacements, a lot more punk inspired take on #powerpop

When Edgar the goldfish dies, a whole new world of emotions and adventures opens up for Eva and Valentin, later joined by Lucas. There's no way for them to keep it all in — in 2017, they create edgar déception as a way to channel their feelings into music. Sometimes fast and chaotic, other times calm and ambient, edgar déception’s songs rise and fall, capturing the feelings of everyday life through sweet riffs and intense buildups.

HALFSILKS are a Berlin based trio consisting of bassist/vocalist Karen Thompson from Winnipeg, drummer/vocalist Jana Sotzko from Berlin and synth player/ vocalist Olivier Bernet from France.
They manage to sit within the realm of post-punk whilst swirling around it 60s vibes, harmonies that reminisce on both sunshine pop and the avant-garde.
