I'll briefly say a few words about the films and then will stay on for a discussion. Last Monday, the discussion after the screening of All Light Everywhere was fascinating, and I'm sure we'll have a similar one this time.

Hope to see you there!

Thanks to Julian Ross & Ronald Simons for the invitation to curate this mini-program!

No way—today I’m starting my new position as Assistant Professor of Practice at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology in Guangzhou, China!

Over the next few years, I’ll be teaching and researching DMI design practices in a totally new context—just steps away from one of the world’s major manufacturing hubs. It’s bound to be wild.

But hey, don’t be fooled by the corporate-style photo or the fancy titles—I’m still the same A++ weirdo you all know.

New double issue in and full of brilliant articles. Congrats to the editors Ellen Waterman and Peter Dickinson. Nice to share ideas drawing on over ten years of and art in research and practice with community partners, and in teaching contexts, and to co-write with my brilliant grad student Brandon Watson. Check out the whole issue here: performancematters-thejournal..

We’re on campus at Royal Holloway today for our forum day on #Technology & Contemporary Classical Music: #Methodologies in #PracticeBasedResearch with a lovely group of practice researchers from around the UK. We’re going to be chatting about the #methods & methodologies we use for doing our #research, determine what approaches we have in common & discovering new strategies which might be broadly useful in this field - excited to see where we end up with this! #musictechnology #ArtisticResearch

I think I might be ready for tomorrow’s play test of the final room of Haydn Space Opera with Open Scores Lab. There is a (quite high) possibility that there may just be too many videos in this room and the whole thing may crash but I decided to try being ambitious. Can always delete some but adding more mid-session would be impossible. Fingers are crossed! #PracticeAsResearch #PracticeBasedResearch #ArtisticResearch #MozillaHubs #VR #VRMusic #BastardAssignments

In case anyone's interested, this one's on 'making the #private #public' so contains sections on defining types of #documentation, how I'm using documentation in pieces in the portfolio and finally a shortish section on managing #vulnerability when using documentation in a piece. #artisticResearch #PracticeBasedResearch #PracticeAsResearch

Catching up! Just posted volumes 15 & 16 of my #composition #notebooks online at notebook.caitlinrowley.com - this brings things up to early August 2022, with intense work towards the end on From the Exquisite Dark, but also some bits on A Memory of Wind & some other bits & pieces. Almost back on track! #PracticeAsResearch #ArtisticResearch #PracticeBasedResearch

9 notebook spreads laid out in a 3 by 3 grid. The pages are handwritten with patches of colour and some photos and train tickets pasted in here and there.

Good #writing this morning. I'm working through a section on using #interdisciplinarity to establish discursive relationships between private and public creative spaces (i.e. studio/notebook/stage) in my portfolio pieces. Finding this section more satisfying than previous bits in this chapter & I suspect at the end of it I'll be able to chop out a bunch of stuff from other sections, which will be v good. #PhDLife #ArtisticResearch #PracticeAsResearch #PracticeBasedResearch

Volumes 13 & 14 of my #composition #notebooks are up now. Continuing slow composition progress through this period (Jan-Apr 2022), but work started on two collaborative pieces - From the Exquisite Dark with Josh Spear & Nightcall with Edward Henderson. Some other bits too, and some mentions for pieces I still haven't started/finished & may have in fact abandoned... notebook.caitlinrowley.com/ #PracticeAsResearch #PracticeBasedResearch #ArtisticResearch #Practice

Images of nine notebook spreads. There are some patches of colour here and there, a few pasted in images. Most notably, in the second row, there are rough circular patches - in the leftmost image, these are randomly placed, but have clearly been torn out of the collaged page seen in the central image. Some of the writing has the appearance of lists, some seems to be more thorough thoughts. A couple of pages with week-to-a-page vertical layout as in a diary, are blurred so the writing is indistinct.

Started a new #ProceduralBlending diagram today, this time for Quiet Songs - it's really surprising me how it's making me think about how far back some of the ideas for these pieces have started, with seeds in work done (used or not) for multiple previous works. Also making me think hard about why I've made the decisions I've made, which is proving valuable. #PracticeAsResearch #PracticeBasedResearch #ArtisticResearch #PhDLife

This #ProceduralBlending diagram for Haydn Space Opera is beginning to terrify me - & it seems it's beginning to terrify #excalidraw too because when I save, some of the longer arrows bounce back on themselves & stop being attached to where they should be - anyone else found this/found a fix for this? (possible solution: don't make your diagram so damn enormous, I know). So much clarity going on here though... #PracticeAsResearch #PracticeBasedResearch #obsidianMD #ArtisticResearch #phdlife

A complex swirling diagram of coloured shapes and flowing lines. We can't read the text because it's so tiny (the original was 8 times this size) but we can note many curving blue-green lines going from the left side of the diagram to the right - this represents the direct use of documentation from the start of the project in the final form of the piece - no documentation from the later stages of the work has yet been used directly - something I need to address!
