Update on the Prairieland case from their support committee:

This week, defendants Autumn Hill, Zachary Evetts, Benjamin Song, Meagan Morris, Ines Soto, Liz Soto, Savanna Batten, Maricela Rueda, and Daniel Sanchez Estrada were federally indicted together on the same case. These defendants, except for Sanchez Estrada, were indicted on a range of charges including riot, material support of terrorism, use of explosive, attempted murder, and discharge of a deadly weapon. Sanchez Estrada was indicted on corruptly concealing a document and conspiracy to conceal a document. Defendants Joy Gibson, Nathan Baumann, Lynette Sharp, Susan Kent, and Rebecca Morgan were charged with a single count of material support of terrorism. These defendants have signed plea deals and will formally enter a guilty plea on Wednesday, November 19 and Monday, November 24. The trial date for the federal case against Evetts, Hill, and others will likely be set in by the end of the month, and we expect the date to be in late December 2025 or early January 2026.

On the state case, Janette Goering had a writ of habeas corpus hearing on a reduction to her $5 million bond. She was denied the bond reduction with no explanation. Susan Kent pled not guilty to her state charges and has a state jury trial set for March 2026. Dario Sanchez’s state jury trial is still set for January 2026.

Many dear, warm and supportive greetings here from the other side of the ocean, from Germany to Eric King. We had occasional correspondence when he was in prison in the USA, and I was here in Germany. The state authorities tried to break us. They did not succeed. Such letter-writing events help the prisoners to survive!

Did you know that Sex Workers Outreach Project has a prison letter writing program? You can easily sign up to become a pen pal with a criminalized sex worker on their website. They don't ask for very much personal info, just a name and email, and country/state you live in. They also have a return address you can use if you don't have an address you feel comfortable using for prison mail. If you've been considering letter writing this is an easy way to connect with people who often don't get as much support as higher profile political prisoners!

This holiday season, please consider supporting antifascist prisoners. It's important for us to stand up for those who have put themselves on the front lines against fascism.

One case we'd like to highlight is Alex Stokes... sentenced to twenty years. From his support site:

freealexstokes.com/alexs-story

"On January 6, 2021, protestors gathered outside the New York State Capitol in Albany, NY in support of the Stop the Steal rally in Washington DC. A handful of counter protesters spoke out against them and a melee broke out after a Proud Boy tased a Black man in the neck. Alex was watching from the sidelines and ran to help others. Police did not intervene until the violence had ended and ultimately arrested three Black activists. Alex was charged with several violent felonies. The Proud Boys that engaged in the violence were not arrested at the scene."

"Alex’s family and friends maintain that he was railroaded by the system. He was a journalist under a court-ordered gag-order for over a year. His previous work and experience with dangerous hate groups were inadmissible for his defense, but the prosecution picked apart his social media accounts and portrayed his actions as premeditated. He was found guilty on all charges and sentenced to 20 years in prison, despite the fact that no one died and neither of the victims received life-altering injuries. One even began a job as an EMT just 6 weeks later."

"A man with no previous violent criminal history, with lifelong ties to the community, was issued a sentence far more severe than most who commit reckless and premeditated acts of violence. His sentence is longer than those who assaulted a police officer at the US Capitol on January 6, 2021 and those that organized the insurrection itself."

The letters to prisoners writing group has been a bit touch and go the last few months, with illness and major life things coming up. Apologies to anyone who's tried to stop by or reached out about it. That said, things have leveled out a bit and we'll be back this month!

Thursday, September 5th from 6:30-8pm at Revolutions Bookshop in St. John's. Supplies are always provided, masks are required.

If it isn't a million degrees out we'll prop the doors open. A sweet dog will be there to solicit pets and lay at feet. It's a very chill and nice time all around, regardless of your level of experience.

Big thank you to everyone who has supported this, and more importantly supported the people inside :black_sparkling_heart:

How to write a letter to a prisoner if you are not in Russia? Guide for those who are not native Russian speakers

Is it possible to write a letter in English?

The new rules of procedure in Russian prisons allow correspondence in any language, but, unfortunately, this does not work in practice. Most often, such letters are simply not allowed through, and if they are, many prisoners will not be able to read them. Even if on the outside a person spoke English, then in prison this skill is lost, because there is no practice.

You can ask your friends to translate your letter or use online translators. Automatic translations are not very good, but your support for the prisoner will be more important than the literacy of the letter itself.

To make it easier to translate the answer to your letter into English, ask the recipient to write it in block letters.

What to write about in a letter?

In a cell where the only entertainment available is talking to fellow inmates, books, letters, and the occasional TV, it's interesting to read just about anything.

In the first letter, you should introduce yourself, tell about yourself and your hobbies, and in response ask about the interests of the prisoner, so it will be easier for you to find common topics for conversation. Tell about the latest news, your pets, places to walk and travel. You can also describe the country where you live and its cultural practices.

In prison, everything that is outside of it will be interesting.

What exactly should not be written?

Do not discuss in correspondence the materials of the case and the facts related to them. This may harm your recipient, any additional information about the “crime” may add to the charge.

At present, everything is not clear with the discussion of the war in correspondence, in some institutions such letters are easily passed, in some they become a problem for prisoners, or the censor simply does not pass them on.

How does censorship work?

General censorship rules for pre-trial detention centers and colonies do not exist at all. Not to miss the letter may be due to the internal rules of the institution or simply the mood of the censor. The only thing left to do here is to try. To increase your chances of getting censored, don't use swear words or strong language.

How to send an email and get a response?

You can send a letter by regular mail if your country of residence has not restricted postal communication with Russia. It is worth putting paper and a spare envelope into the envelope. Also, the prisoner will need postage stamps to answer, but they can only be bought in Russia. Often they are passed on by relatives or friends.

The letter can also be sent online through the volunteer resource RosUznik. It's easier and free, and the answer will come to your email in a scanned form. RosUznik project exists only on donations, you can find more information on how to support the project on their website.

Support the prisoners in any way you can.

People shouldn't be in prisons, and prisons shouldn't exist.

Does anyone know of any groups doing prisoner support work for people who’ve been locked up in relation to having an abortion? I know certain areas are cracking down harder than others but I haven’t heard much about the people actually being sentenced. I’d really like to get in touch with others already doing this kind support. Luckily, abortion is still legal in the state I’m in, but that also means there hasn’t been as much movement on this type of project locally, as far as I’m aware.

Also, if you don’t know of groups doing this but are interested in doing this type of work let’s start something! I’m open to ideas and suggestions and any leads on how to find people caught up in the system.
