I get it. #RejectionSensitivity
How on earth do people cope with wanting something that someone else has control over?
Every time I have to apply for a house rental or do a job interview, I feel like I have to invest so much. I have to imagine myself living there or working there, & then... I have to wait in a Schrödinger state, hoping it'll be a Yes but mentally preparing myself for a No.
Thank God I don't have to date. I don't think I'd escape with my soul in one piece. đ
And at first I thought: "You can't do anything, what gets in my way is a 'me-problem.'"
But then I actually thought for a sec before answering, and my brain shocked me with a really important insight.
I realized, what would help me the most is to hear positive feedback or encouragement if/when I do something that's actually good, or that represents progress (at any time/stage).

but if you read that and you're like "OMG how," you are my people and the answer is I have a great therapist and a ton of social support and have put together the most amazing and affirming team to help me get through this process without letting rejection-sensitivity win.

This is my damn neurodivergent brain lately.

Rejection Sensitive Dysphoria. For me, itâs the most painful part of ADHD. It invokes intense loneliness.
If youâre neurotypical, know that some folks are feeling things you donât understand. Things that seem unreasonable and absurd. But theyâre very real. Please be kind.

Heute habe ich mich dem Thema Rejection Sensitivity gewidmet und ein bisschen was aufgearbeitet.

I tried to start a support group for people with rejection sensitivity, nobody wanted to join, and I was absolutely devastated : P

And in personal life, too.
Is that tied into rejection sensitivity for you all as well? For me, I sometimes catch myself aiming for perfection to avoid criticism (in what I'm coming to realize was rejection sensitivity).

I had taken for granted, more or less, that rejection sensitive dysphoria (RSD) is an identifiable thing, usually associated with ADHD
A thing that I identify with
So I was interested to see videos online criticising William Dodsonâs one-psychiatrist campaign for its (literal) treatment as a medical condition
This article by Katy Bartzis provides a useful discussion of the issues:

@ashleyspencer @actuallyautistic unmasking is complex particularly if it's unconscious, but it's helped me to learn that a lot of unmasking is just not trying to compensate as much and allowing yourself to be how you are without pretending you got that joke or that you heard what they said with all that background noise, etc.
however if you have #RejectionSensitivity this is a lot harder than it sounds.
After reading a third of #DifferentNotLess by Temple Grandin I could see some things that were relevant but my own searching and things people have shared here (thank you all) have helped me home in on two areas I strongly recognise in myself, that are perhaps responsible for other traits such as routine, planning & rehearsing everything and difficulty w change.
Those are Pathological #DemandAvoidance and #RejectionSensitivity. Maybe also #SocialAnxiety.
Wanting to communicate my needs and wants to a business/service provider is conflicting mightily with my need to not bother anyone, ever, about anything, lest they find me annoying and demanding, and thus refuse to work with me again.
Also conflicting with my need to interact with people via email or phone.
This video by Catieosaurus introduced me to the #ADHD notion of âemotional permanenceâ
Related to the out-of-sight-out-of-mind thing about objects (which is *not* object permanence btw), this could account for (some?) #RejectionSensitivity in ADHDers

#RejectionSensitivity (#RSD) takes many forms for me, and can often be a clearly irrational response đ
It has hit me hard a few times during #Autscape2022 because of
â having a flaky Zoom connection
â not being there in person
â not relating to something
â other people arguing
Having thought a bit about #RejectionSensitivity, #SituationalMutism and #SocialAnxiety tonight, Iâm even more irritated at all the times in my life Iâve been labelled âshyâ (among other things)
Thatâs really not the right word at all! đŁ
Found this live-streamed discussion from #AUcademy (which I missed the start and end of â so catching up now) to be a very interesting dive into (heightened) #RejectionSensitivity (or #RSD, #RejectionSensitiveDysphoria as those who pathologise us would have it):

Thanks to Chloe, Victoria, Ben and Si for sharing their thoughts (and to those whose interesting comments were shared)
Because I saw it on the birdsite, I began writing a commentary there:
