PETE TOWNSHEND & RONNIE LANE
Rough Mix
1983 Canada reissue

Hurdling towards the end of the week with this underrated gem.

I’ve always had a great deal of love and affection for this record. Probably more love than I do The Who’s Face Dances or It’s Hard.
I’ve gotten far more enjoyment from this than I ever did The Who’s last gasp.

There’s so many good songs here.
Lane’s “Nowhere To Run” is just a killer, and Townshend’s “Heart To Hang Onto” is one of his best songs, period.

I discovered this album REALLY late; somtime in early 2000, when I was preparing to pick up and move to #nyc . I have listened to it a handful of times every year since then, & it’s one of those “comforting old friend” type records.

"All or Nothing" is a song written by #SteveMarriott and #RonnieLane of the British #rock band #SmallFaces and released as a single in 1966. The song reached #numberOne on the #UKSinglesChart on 15 September 1966. The song was also a major hit in both the Netherlands, where it reached number two and Ireland, where it reached number three. It was also the first song by the Small Faces to chart in Ireland, as "#WhatchaGonnaDoAboutIt", "#ShaLaLaLaLee".

The prompt is Forever

Billy Nichols, “Forever’s No Time at All” from Pete Townshend’s “Who Came First” 1972

I recall reading that after dropping acid and getting the feeling that he wasn’t in his body, #PeteTownshend went searching for something more. He became a follower of the teachings of Indian guru Meher Baba, sprinkling references in #TheWho's output and, with fellow-devotee chums, recording a couple of albums in his honor.

For Who Came First, regarded as his first solo release (get the cover pic pun?đŸ„š), he took some tracks from those albums, tweaked some of his Lifehouse demos, and recorded some additional tracks. It’s all Pete except for a #RonnieLane track with Pete on guitar, and the Billy Nichols track where Pete doesn’t appear at all.

I love this album despite its demo-y feel (or maybe "because of,” in a pre-Scoop world?) because it's Pete; ironically I’m featuring its one Pete-free track, but it's a good one.

"Ooh La La" is a 1973 song by the band #Faces, written by #RonnieLane and #RonnieWood. It is the title song of the band's last studio album, #OohLaLa. The lead vocals were provided by Wood, a rarity in the band's catalogue; lead vocals were usually performed by #RodStewart and less often by Ronnie Lane. Stewart and Lane each recorded lead vocals for the song, but reportedly neither was satisfied by their attempt.

"Lazy Sunday" is a song by the English band #SmallFaces, which reached number two on the #UKSinglesChart in 1968 and number 42 in #Canada. Against the band's wishes, it preceded the album as a single release.

"Itchycoo Park" is a song by English rock band Small Faces, written by #SteveMarriott and #RonnieLane. Largely written by Lane, it was among a number of pop songs of the era to make use of #flanging, an effect involving, at that time, electro-mechanical processes. The song was not included on any of their UK albums, but was however featured on the North American release #ThereAreButFourSmallFaces (1968). Released on 4 August 1967 by #ImmediateRecords.
