John William Waterhouse (English, 1849-1917)
A Mermaid
1900
Oil on canvas (96,5 x 66,6 cm)
Royal Academy of Arts

It is possible that Waterhouse's painting of A Mermaid was inspired by Alfred Lord Tennyson's poem The Mermaid (1830) which includes the lines:
Who would be
A mermaid fair,
Singing alone,
Combing her hair

Tennyson's poem goes on to describe the mermaid seeking and finding love among the mermen:
Of the bold merry mermen under the sea.
They would sue me, and woo me, and flatter me,
In the purple twilights under the sea;
But the king of them all would carry me,
Woo me, and win me, and marry me.

However Waterhouse was also interested in the darker mythology of the mermaid as an enchantress. Mermaids traditionally were sirens who lured sailors to their death through their captivating song. They were also tragic figures as mermaids could not survive in the human world which they yearned for and men could not exist in their watery realm, so any relationship was doomed. In Waterhouse's painting no sailors are depicted so that despite being a 'siren' the mermaid is shown as an alluring rather lonely figure, albeit with a fish tail. The atmosphere evoked is one of gentle melancholy as the mermaid sits alone in an isolated inlet, dreamily combing out her long hair with her lips parted in song. Beside her is a shell filled with pearls, which some believed to be formed from the tears of dead sailors.

Visiting the this morning, I discovered for the first time (to my shame) the copy there of 's - royalacademy.org.uk/art-artist it's not only v early, it's nearly complete (only top bit is missing). Just amazing, and much better than the sadly degraded original now...

As interesting as the paintings themselves (at least to me) is an artist’s processes and equipment. I may have become a little excited seeing JMW Turner’s travelling watercolour box. #GhostOnTour #RoyalAcademy

I’m looking at trains to London in October as there’s an exhibition I’d like to see at Royal Academy of Arts.

The cost, even off peak, is absolutely prohibitive.

Until this country gets public transport right, we will continue to kill this planet. There’s an unpopular truth for you.

It makes me so. fucking. angry.

So now I just won’t go. Which reinforces my feeling of living to work rather than working to live. Fucking brilliant.

This one from the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition is a sort of reverse of the Dadaist "found object" idea. Instead of using a found object as art, make art that looks like a found object. This is a bronze, painted to look like polystyrene and sticky tape. It was realistic enough that it fooled me until I read the catalogue! [and I am still not convinced that it's not a double-bluff]

"Veg Box" Gavin Turk. Yours for £90k, but you have to collect, 'cos it's pretty heavy!

#RoyalAcademy #artwork

Picture shows what looks like a worn dirty white polystyrene insulating box with blue purple and yellow ripped tape on it; it is on a parquet floor surrounded by a gaffer tape square with "Please do not touch" on a plaque to the bottom left.

Some feet are also visible from people looking at other artworks behind the box.

One of two Trump-related artworks in the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition. This one was very, very, uncanny valley

"Donald Trump Helmet Head" John Humphries, fiberglass and Acrylic. Edition of 5 at £120,000 if you fancy one!

An artwork called "Donald Trump Helmet Head" showing Trump's head, slightly squashed made in fibreglass and acryllic. Picture shows three views, back, left side and right side.

Another from the Young Artist's show.

Sphere

Oil paint on polystyrene

This piece is an oil painting on a sphere, made with the goal of representing an omnidirectional image as a painting. The subject matter is of the London Underground and was based on a picture that I took with an omnidirectional camera. It comes from a series of paintings taking place in non-Euclidean space.

Three pictures of an artwork on a sphere from three angles. It depicts the London Underground, and is painted in oil on polystyrene.

Visited the Royal Academy summer show yesterday while family went to Wizard of Oz (Why didn't I have a ticket? It's complicated!)

Some interesting works I'll toot later, but probably my fave was one of the young artist's, Gabriel, age 14, Commentary of the Crown... about our new King and former Prince...

#RoyalAcademy #artwork

A mixed media picture with the exhibition number 195 in the lower left. Framed with an Ash-wood (or fake wood!) frame, it shows six images of King Charles III. Top row - Charles with crown; Charles with makeup as joker, Charles with crook, corn stalk in mouth, tweeds and flat cap, with a "Dutchy Originals" badge. Bottom row, Charles in his mother's fave blue hat, coat and pearls with huge pear earrings and makeup; Charles being posed for a police mugshot with "County Jail 870 256" on the ID board, and wearing USA-style orange overalls. Charles in a purple suit with white pinstripe, white shirt with yellow tie.
