January 12, 1957 - The Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC) was founded by Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and other African-American clergymen who wanted to press for civil rights long denied members of their community.
Sixty black ministers from ten states went to Atlanta, Georgia, to set up the coordinating group.
They elected King as its first president, with the Reverend Ralph David Abernathy as treasurer.

New #research article coming out this year showing that US Southern counties with #CivilRights organizations during the movement era (1954-65) now enjoy less #RacialInequality than those lacked any orgs. This diagram shows the prevalence of these CR organizations by county. Lots of #NAACP chapters, relatively few CORE orgs or #SNCC projects. Most counties had just one of the "Big 4" (NAACP, CORE, SNCC, or #SCLC), 44% had 0. Counties containing #Atlanta and #Jackson, MS had all four. #Juneteenth

He seemed immortal. I wish I knew more about the short time my dad worked with him while at the #SCLC. As it happened, at my graduation from Brandeis in 1991, the university awarded #HarryBelafonte an honorary doctorate. When he stepped up to accept it, rather than make a speech, Belafonte said something like, it's been my great honor in life to sing with people around the world.
