Yesterday at #scouts we tried to discuss our Personal Challenges. But let's be honest they don't want to do that when dicking about is more fun. Anyway, mine is to scroll less and read more books. And today, I have failed completely in this goal. #ScoutingUK

Best #scouts session of the term. We had 3 bases, 45 mins per base; rifle shooting, cookie baking and sewing a “camp crockery” bag out of a tea towel.

It was hectic, but everyone left with a target with at least one hole in it, a bag and a cookie!

Field test of the winter very cold hammock set up. With just hammock, tarp, 2 over and 2 under quilts + underquilt protector, pack was full and max I can carry (15lb) recovering from knee surgery.
Can I do this? Probably
Lessons learned: Wear gaiters, warmer socks/toe warmers. Need to shovel out under hammock before setting up. Need snow anchors. Will need to borrow a sled to carry more gear if I want to eat, change clothes or drink anything. #camping #hammock #winter #scouts

A hammock set up in New England winter woods with about 25cm of fluffy snow on ground. Slung between two black birch trees the outer tan layer is an underquilt protector as a proof of concept from an old nylon tent fly. It needs refining. Inside are a hammock with sleeping bags inside and two underquilts hung beneath. All are down and need to not be compressed to function properly. There is a ridgeline above the hammock with two black mesh pouches for small items and clothing. This hammock was hung too low.

The hammock system from the other side with the tarp over it. Must have a way to anchor the tarp guy lines since cannot put stakes in the ground. Logs work ok. For the actual camp out, will need to shovel snow out from under tarp and use it to construct a low wall around the edge of the tarp to provide a further wind barrier.

I've been wondering. Has anybody got any good tips (experience) #baking #sourdough #bread in a dutch oven on a camp fire? I was thinking of trying that with our #scouts group at one of the camps this year. The group has a dutch oven (so I won't have to 'ruin' mine that's well used to baking in our oven at home) that could be used, and I have a nice rye starter.

It should work, but I have no idea on timing, strategy, etc. to do that on a camp fire. But I'd like this to be a hopefully successful experience for them on back to basics, and not a likely doomed experiment.

Mixed bag at scouts on Monday, we’ve got 4 leaders (the luxury, I know!) so each came up with a 20 minute activity that the 4 patrols could rotate around.

Mine was a debate on AI in school work - I shoehorned it into part of the World Challenge Award. There was no consensus on what is allowed by the school, and they all think they’ve probably cheated at some point. Definitely feels like the school should have a policy kids and parents sign up to.

El pasado sábado se llevó a cabo una actividad de convivencia entre las manadas del Grupo XVI: Jesucristo MID con nuestros hermanos del Grupo V "Anayatzin" de SCOUTS MEXICANOS, A.C.

En esta actividad conocímos sobre los personajes de la manada, trabajamos la ley de la manada, maximas y promesa, hermandad scout y que todos somos de la misma sangre. Así como el llenado de sus agendas para conocerse mejor entre ellos y mantener el contacto para futuras actividades.
