If you want traffic to suck less, check out this video. I learn a few new terms, like red light platooning. #BikeLanes #sfbike
After a sunny weekend, the weather shifted on Veterans Day, November 11. Rain is welcome in Monterey County and most of California. We refreshed our compilation of Tips for People Who Bike in Rainy Weather by adding @BarbChamberlainโs Nov 11 post. Also included are links to tips from Cascade Bicycle Club, Bike Portland, San Francisco Bicycle Coalition, @BikeEastBay, and Bike League. https://bikemonterey.org/rainy-weather-tips-for-people-who-bike.html

Our #CalBike partner San Francisco Bike Coalition has an excellent new video, a message also relevant for Monterey County and virtually everywhere! https://youtu.be/kDLgzs_Q2cc?si=AkcqgxLgu5NrkCad

@icanzilb It is typical for people to complain and if city leaders hold to the plan it can work out in the long run. Here in San Francisco there is a street named Valencia which has been debated for many years. Long ago it was like other streets with 2 lanes going both ways and the SF Bike Coalition led by Mary Brown ran a campaign to changed the street to include bike lanes. Shop owners strongly opposed it and claimed it would force them out of business. But it turned it into a very pedestrian friendly area with a ton of foot traffic and shops and restaurants have thrived.

A lot changed during the pandemic. Since it was common for cars to ignore the bike lanes and cause serious safety hazards the bike lanes were moved to the center with barriers to prevent cars from casually and suddenly cutting off bike commuters. #sfbike
As we told these visitors from #Sausalito we met on the City of #Monterey section of the #MontereyBay Sanctuary Scenic Trail network this eve, people who bike are our favorite visitors. And we dig it even more that they are members of our #CalBike partner San Francisco Bike Coalition.

Breezy but gorgeous out. #sfba #sfbike #sanfrancisco
On my wish list: a protected bike lane on McAllister Street from Market to Gough.
Here's the safest way I found to get to and from Lake Merced on a bike. I only did it headed north but I think it works both ways.
1. Go to the crosswalk just west of Sunset on Lake Merced. Cross over to the 2 way protected bike lane.
2. Switch to Lakeshore Drive at Berkshire Way when the bike lane vanishes.
3. cross the terrible crosswalk above when you reach Sloat, you might need to drag your bike over some curbs
4. escape down 39th to the relative safety of Vicente
Do you know about Mary Brown and how she changed Valencia Street in SF? https://sfbike.org/news/remembering-mary-brown-pioneer-for-valencia-street-bike-lanes/ #sfbike #bike #cycling #bikelanes
My take:
Returning Valencia Street center bike lane to its โhistoricโ iteration as a sanctioned double parking lane is not an option.
The huge increase in families, kids, and older people biking/scootering on Valencia has proven the need for a safe path across town.
Itโs a wide street. Letโs join together to make this work.
โ Can SFMTA adjust the ratio of parking spots to loading zones?
โ Merchants need to decide โ maybe on a block-by-block basis โ whether they want parklets or car parking.
โ Can delivery apps rent vacant storefronts as hubs for e-delivery bikes? You can park a lot more bikes than cars in front of restaurants. And reduce unsafe double parking.
โ More bike parking is needed on every block. The new racks at the DeYoung offer a slim, practical design.
I get that itโs synecdoche or w/e but the "this bike lane is killing small blah blah" slogan is kinda funny
the entire road was redesignedโparking removed, turns prohibited, etc. so it is annoying to center (heh) the bike lane in the argument when so few bike riders even wanted the stupid thing
if the posters said โSFMTA is killingโฆโ we'd all agree with it
Thanks Joel Engardio for showcasing some of the best of SF! I indeed was one of the lazy ones opting for staying inside and working on the rainy Friday afternoon, but I enjoyed this SF Standard article. #sfbike https://sfstandard.com/2023/11/18/san-francisco-apec-bike-ride-sunset-engardio/
After heroic legislative efforts to finally get speed cameras to SF, I was disheartened to read it will be years before we see them on a small number of streets. Please sign this petition to get the SFMTA to roll these out faster: https://actionnetwork.org/petitions/speed-cameras-2023-10

It's Phoenix Day today!
The big event is Sunday Streets in Excelsior, but there are also block parties throughout the city, including on several slow streets, some organized bike rides, and @pageslowstreet is opening the first community parklet under the current parklet program!
my current hyperfixation is watching my stolen bike move around the city. ๐ฟ

i'm gonna keep updating this until A) i get my bike back or B) the location tracker gets disabled. still waiting for sfpd to respond to my police report.
One of the dumbest things about riding a bike in #SanFrancisco is the recently-installed center-running bike lane on Valencia. I think this is the first pedestrian death that has happened since it was installed. Valencia needs to be pedestrianized instead of trying half-baked infrastructure ideas to appease to car drivers.
