Why are Bicycling Monterey and many other #California #bike / #ActiveTransportation advocates (calbike.org/about_us/who_we_ar) members of the California Bicycle Coalition aka #CalBike?

See ED Kendra Ramsey’s msg below.

When people hear “bicycles” or “active transportation,” it can sound like a narrow issue, something nice to have, but secondary to bigger concerns like public safety, public health, or community connection.

CalBike exists to challenge that assumption.

Because the truth is this: our streets sit at the center of nearly every major problem we’re trying to solve.

We have given a third of our public space to roads. Roads that shape how safe we feel in our neighborhoods. Whether kids can walk to school. Whether older adults can stay mobile. Whether communities are connected, or cut apart. Whether we reduce climate pollution or lock it in for another generation. All along the life cycle - our roads, and the ability to freely use them is at the nexus of a life well lived.
Help Make Our Streets Better
When streets are designed only as many cars as quickly as possible, the consequences ripple outward: more traffic violence, worse air quality, less physical activity, deeper isolation.

This is why CalBike focuses on streets.

Not because bicycles are the only answer—but because better streets unlock progress everywhere else.

#Guelph could absolutely be an amazing place to walk/bike/bus around (even in winter). We just need to choose to do it!

“The federal government is hunting for a justification to eliminate key bike lanes in the nation's capital, sources say — and if the feds are able to push that controversial agenda through, some fear it could set a disturbing new precedent for federal interference into active transportation projects across the nation.” 🤬

Have you ever used an electric scooter đź›´ to commute or for errands? Would you ever consider it? If you have, what was your experience like?

If more Red Counties and States stayed honestly focused on economics, housing, healthcare, and quality of life mobility and access projects like this we could all breathe easier.

Greenville County, South Carolina’s “Freeway for Bikes”, primarily the Prisma Health Swamp Rabbit Trail, a popular 28-mile greenway connecting Travelers Rest to Greenville along a former railroad corridor, but the county also develops local bike routes, like the one connecting White Horse Road to downtown for commuters, fostering a strong cycling culture with trails, bike lanes, and support from organizations like Bike Walk Greenville.

Sometimes it takes a seizure to learn how your city functions for people outside of cars.

“I thought losing my licence would make me more dependent on others. Instead, it taught me about interdependence. I can drive again now, or opt to walk or bike. But what if I couldn’t? Who would help me up the hill? And, who can I help?”

Kick rocks!

That’s what we started to do, attempting to use our feet to clear the west shoulder of Olmsted Rd near Hwy 68 / CA SR 68. Then we noticed the east shoulder and travel lanes were likewise strewn with many rocks! Don’t know what mishap left that mess, but we’re reporting to road cleanup crews : bikemonterey.org/where-to-repo.

See updates to Bike Buzz for more on road maintenance, i.e., bikemonterey.org/bike-buzz-win.

What to do when you come upon a rockslide (or other debris) that interferes with biking the shoulder of a road (and you normally bike the shoulder of that road, because motor vehicles travel at high speeds in the main travel lanes)?

In California, if it’s a state highway, report it to California Department of Transportation / #Caltrans: csr.dot.ca.gov/.

If not a state highway (not a maintenance responsibility of Caltrans), see where to report in Monterey County, : bikemonterey.org/where-to-repo.

On 4 January 2026, a bicycle has paused on the shoulder of California State Route 68 west of Olmsted Road. Due to a small tree blocking the shoulder, it was necessary to either bike in the motor vehicle travel lane of this high-speed, typically busy highway or hop off and walk the bicycle around the tree.On 4 January 2026, a bicycle has paused on the shoulder of California State Route 68 west of Olmsted Road. We’re grateful to Elias Rodriguez for his generous donation today, designated for Advocacy Projects. We had the pleasure of meeting Elias, on his bicycle, in June at a community gathering at Window on the Bay Park. It was a welcome surprise today to receive his donation, which boosted 2025’s year-to-date total to nearly $11/day, before expenses. bikemonterey.org/about/financi

ICYMI, the work of the Bicycling Monterey site and projects are a grassroots volunteer effort since 2009. Every donation, in any amount, is needed and greatly appreciated!

Jennifer Lynn Chatman of Salinas died Nov 3, 2025 after her bicycle was struck by the trailer of a semi truck at the intersection of South Sanborn Road and Work Street, Salinas.

As we told Sara Rubin, #MontereyCountyNow / #MontereyCountyWeekly editor, infrastructure such as protected bike lanes with a physical barrier are what’s most needed to keep people who bike safer. In general, paint on pavement provides little to no real benefit in preventing fatalities.

Nevertheless, one “paint on pavement” practice we would like to see far more of — and which possibly could have saved Jennifer’s life — is bike boxes at intersections.

The City of Kitchener is starting Connected Kitchener, a study to create a new Transportation and Mobility Plan, towards a transportation system that is more reliable, fair, environmentally friendly, and efficient over the next 25 years.

"Connected Kitchener will support the City’s goals, such as cutting greenhouse gas emissions, making it easier and safer to walk and bike, improving transit, and creating better public spaces. The plan also supports and aligns with Kitchener 2051 by planning a mobility system that enables the land use goals of the Official Plan for the next 25 years.”

Check out the details and, more importantly, provide your feedback!

Over the last few days a number of people have brought up the parking challenges currently experienced in in my community (Squamish, BC 🇨🇦 ). Back in February of 2024 I wrote a blog and created a video about this. If you haven’t seen these yet, I encourage you to have a look. johnfrench.ca/post/baby-you-ca #sqpoli #carculture #activetransportation #localgovernment

A screen capture from a blog post that features a stenciled bicycle image on a multi-use path with text above that reads, “John French, Feb. 26, 2024, 2 minute read.” Further text includes, “Baby, you can drive your car” and “Beep, beep - beep, beep, ya!” The final bit of text is a reference to lyrics written by John Lennon and Paul McCartney.

Rt 2 Corridor (Congress and Ferry)

I submitted the below comment to the public comment section for the Rt. 2 Corridor project. Capital Streets has a good deal of additional information. I write as an RPI alumnus and former resident of the City of Troy. While I now reside across the river in Colonie, I return to Troy regularly to enjoy cultural events, to shop at the farmers market, and to patronize the many fine restaurants and small businesses downtown Troy has to offer (and to attend the occasional hockey game at my alma […]
