#SO50

2025-10-12

Successfully defeated my learning overwhelm and inertia today thanks to some input here on satellite listening!

First bird heard was SO-50 and then later astronaut Mike Fincke making contacts on the space station. With hams from New Jersey, CT, and Quebec. Clear as a bell on just 18° elevation with a Comet SBB5 mag mount dual band whip, Radioddity GD77 and opengd77!

Another listen with a teacher tomorrow!

Today i finalized my dual-band hand-held antenna and made some tests with LEO sats.

I could make my first QSO on #SO50.

It's quite a challenge to deal with azimuth, elevation, polarization ... and calling

The Anytone D878uvii is a great transceiver with its sat mode ! No need to care about the frequencies configuration and Doppler effect. It even provides real time indication on azimuth and elevation.

That was fun !

Just tried to work #SO-50 with the new tape measure yagi.  I don't know if it's because I'm not used to working with a beam or if the bird was quiet but I didn't pick anything up at all.  I know it's not super performant on 70cm, so I'll try it with #AO-85 on its next pass.

Was just trying to work #SO-50.  I was mid QSO with a station in Canada when I got my beard stuck in the PTT switch.  Threw the radio, probably cussed on the air, immediate LOS with the bird... So grumpy right now.  !amateur

No luck on #SO-50 today.  It was a pileup as usual.  !amateur

Good !tzag, friends!  Four day weekend!  Going to try to catch #SO-50 after I drop my son off at school, then I think I'll get some billable hours in and swing trade a little cryptocurrency.  Trying to decide if I'm going to hike a bit or hit the climbing gym today (wife encouraged me to do the latter).  Definitely going to hike a ton this weekend, maybe even camp.  The weather is supposed to be beautiful.

Can't decide if I'm going to stay up until nearly 0100 to catch a near perfect pass of #SO-50.  !amateur

Could not get #SO-50 at all this morning.  Heard two calls but got zero quieting, it's almost like the bird was spinning.  Normally it's much easier for me to work SO-50 than AO-85, so I'm not sure if I am just tired or what.  I should normally be up this early so I used the satellite to get out of bed at a reasonable time.  Didn't get much sleep last night, so I still feel like crap.  Time to start the day, I guess.  Good !tzag and strong !coffee to you all.  /cc !amateur

Can anyone explain to me why recommended Doppler shift adjustment for #SO-50 is on RX but recommended adjustment for #AO-85 is on TX?  !amateur

current process:

0.  open gpredict
1.  update TLEs from network
2.  update TLEs from files i download nightly
3.  find future passes for #AO-85, write down anything over 65 deg
4.  find future passes for #SO-50, write down anything over 65 deg
5.  rinse and repeat every couple of days or so

seems to me that could be automated, even if i have to use something weird like expect to fumble through the gui and save pass reports to parse.

failed to pick up #SO-50 on a near perfect pass again.  really frustrated about this one but i didn't get outside quick enough. !amateur

Just programmed #AO-85 into my HT but the doppler shift seems strange to me, though... I hope I got it right.  That bird and #SO-50 will have near perfect passes tomorrow.  I'm going to work them with the whip instead of losing another chance to the eye-gouger.  It'll be uncomfortable but I'd like to get another entry in my logbook.  !amateur

#SO-50's pass tonight is going to be nearly perfect.  I hope I don't miss the bird by experimenting with this antenna. !amateur
