Fawning over the Yak-141

The Yak-141 ′Freestyle′ was a the first supersonic VTOL fighter jet ever built.

The aircraft was designed as a naval fighter capable of being deployed quickly from the desk of a Russian aircraft carrier in order to intercept enemy aircraft. With the knowledge learned from the experimental Yak-38 VTOL fighter jet, Yakolev set out to create a plane that exceeded the Soviet Navy's expectations.

The Yak-141 achieved its first conventional flight on 9 March 1987. The first hovering flight (vertical takeoff and landing) took place on 29 December 1989. The first complete transition from vertical takeoff to high-speed flight to vertical landing occurred on 13 June 1990.

The first carrier-based vertical takeoff and landing took place on 26 September 1991 from the rolling deck of the Russian aircraft carrier Admiral Gorshkov.

Once out of the prototyping stage, the goal was to expand its role into that of a multirole fighter like the MiG-29 and Su-27M. However, as the Soviet Union fell apart and Russia fell into financial ruin, the project was cancelled.

The Yakolev design bureau, not wanting their designs to die with the project, arranged in secret to have Lockheed acquire detailed information on the Yak-141. This plane would live on as a major inspiration for the engine designed for the Lockheed F-35B.

Achieving VTOL

In order to achieve vertical takeoff, a pair of hatches behind the cockpit and beneath the airframe would open to reveal a pair of Rybinsk RD-41 turbojet engines canted rearwards from vertical. Cold air would then be drawn into the engines from above and vectored downward to provide a combined 83.4 kN of vertical thrust.

At the same time, the nozzle of the main Tumansky R-79V-300 afterburning turbofan engine was segmented in such a way so as to be able to be angled downward to provide 108 kN of vertical thrust.

All three engines were controlled through an interlinked digital system capable of modulating the thrust of all three engines during takeoff, landing, and hovering flight. Due to the amount of heat generated by running all three engines, hovering flight was restricted to no more than 150 seconds (2.5 minutes).

If the aircraft rolled past a certain angle while the nozzles were aimed downward, the Yak-141 was capable of automatically ejecting the pilot from the plane.

Zoomies

In normal flight, the Rybinsk engines would throttle down as the main Tumansky engine pivoted upward to provide sufficient horizontal speed to achieve lift. The main engine could provide up to 152 kN of thrust with afterburner, propelling the Yak-141 to its max speed of Mach 1.45 (1,800 km/h).

Armament

The Yak-141 had 4 underwing hardpoints and 1 fuselage hardpoint capable of hauling 2,600 kg of external stores. This included the R-27 Alamo, R-73 Archer, and in-development R-77 Adder air-to-air missile systems. These were the same missiles being deployed with the MiG-29 and Su-27M.

Once out of the prototyping phase, the role of the Yak-141 was expanded into a multirole fighter equipped to intercept enemy vessels with the in-development Zvezda-Strela Kh-31 anti-ship missiles. Which is absolutely nuts considering this is a VTOL aircraft.

I'm gay for planes

I'm a sucker for that boxy Soviet airframe. It's like a baby MiG-25 or MiG-31.
