Hab einen alten Rechner und bisher 2 TB für #safeguardingresearch zur Verfügung gestellt. Tendenz: Bald steigend

Dezentrales, ungewolltes Backup von Daten, aber auf die gute Art

Is here someone experienced in setting up #WikimediaCommons Upload Campaigns?

If yes, I got a question re requesting the permission to create one :)

The slide has a purple header with the title in white text. Below the header, the main title reads "On the Value of Being Unorthodox: Resilience in a Time of Hostility against Arts and Sciences."
A quote by Kathy Reid is displayed: "As researchers, we often say, 'we need the data.' Today, the data needs us."

Science, researchers and research communities increasingly need to be resilient to threats and actual incursions relating to budget, academic freedom, safety in the public arena, availability of science databases and infrastructures and more. We created this framework to inspire communities in their resilience. It is quite generic, so needs to be customised to specific contexts and threats. #safeguardingresearch #defendresearch #resilience #academicfreedom @RShetty

A visualization of resilience strategies connecting prevention to potential threats, protection to actual threats, resistance to encounters/attacks, withstanding to incursions and repair to destruction. For the prevention strategy we suggest mutual interest and agreements/contracts. For protection we suggest (double) walls and sovereignty/control. For resistance we suggest action/fighting back and in/external solidarity. For withstanding we suggest elasticity and redundancy. For repair we suggest jugaad (=hindi for 'make do') and resources. The are generic strategies that need to be customised to specific contexts and threats.

Initiatives like @SafeguardingResearch work hard to rescue #researchData that are (about to be) deleted by the Trump administration, by using a Bittorrent network where many small nodes contribute.

This is a very #solarpunk way of doing science: community-driven, decentralized & resilient #SolarpunkScience.
Some tinker projects:

🎯1. Develop the most low-cost (in €, material resources, and CO2) p2p solution for data rescueing.

Maybe a #RaspberryPi + existing HDD? Reuse existing hardware. Compute costs in absolute and relative way (€ and CO2 per terabyte of data stored & shared). Is a bigger server plugged to a uni network more efficient in relative costs?

🎯2. Run a hackathon, help others to install the bittorrent clients on whatever machine they have.

🎯3 (Bonus): Build a purely solar powered, autonomous seeding node. E.g. the #LowTechMagazine went a long way in optimizing a web server that runs on solar + battery (achieving >95% uptime on a 50W solar setup)
solar.lowtechmagazine.com/2020

Imagine little autonomous, solar powered seeding nodes standing in gardens, tirelessly sharing research data whenever the sun is shining. A project that regenerates our digital commons in a sustainable, community-led way 🌱.

Please share your thoughts - is this a feasible and worthwhile project?

For @SafeguardingResearch I'm currently looking for #Autism / #ActuallyAutistic related public material (US based).

Material that should be safeguarded & accessible, no matter what #RFKjr does.

If you know of any, please reply here.
Best would be a link + short explanation what it is/entails + why you consider it important.

Heya lovely people 👋
For #SciOp we (@SafeguardingResearch) are looking for dev contributions. There are a couple of bite-/morsel-sized tasks, e.g.:
- Make Publisher independent table codeberg.org/Safeguarding/scio
- Improve SearchableMixin to support full text search on joined items codeberg.org/Safeguarding/scio
- and more: codeberg.org/Safeguarding/scio

The stack is #python (fastapi) + htmx, #sqlite (sqlmodel), "low-fi, standards-compliant html and almost no js"

Be a part of #SafeguardingResearch, join us!

The outright wrecking of the scientific infrastructure in the US under the current administration chilled me to my bone. Kept me doomscrolling. But I finally found a way to do something positive, in a small way: I dedicated some storage space and a bit of my internet connection to a decentralized backup of deleted research data.
I am happy to report that @SafeguardingResearch 's torrent swarm now has ca 14 TB storage and a Gbit connection more.

France24’s great piece on the race to archive threatened data.

It features DRP, PEDP, and our team, @SafeguardingResearch. And @lavaeolus got some quotes in there as well (he started our project). Notably:

“There is a historical precedent for autocratic regimes changing what they want people to know, or changing reality according to their point of view…the end goal is controlling the population.”

“People have already tried to erase research [in the past]. We want to make sure that won’t happen again.”

Article on France24, featuring Data Rescue Project, PEDP, and @SafeguardingResearch.
I'm glad they let me point out the core ideas of our effort.

I joined the #safeguardingresearch #sciop torrent swarm to keep datasets from USA science institutions easily available.

Setup a qbittorrent Docker docs.linuxserver.io/images/doc
Added dataset feeds by threat level (I went with extinct, takedown_issued and endangered) sciop.net/feeds
Done

Screenshot of qbittorrent web interface showing 90 torrents that are currently downloading or seeding. Free space 12.5 TB, 9.5 MBit/s download speed, 1.6 TB total, 1.5 MBit/s upload speed, 115 GB total.

I tried to do some research on what happens to US #museums, in order to understand what it means for museum data. But lots of uncertainties.

Who is looking at the data side of the attacks on museums and on the scope of web archiving necessary for #SafeguardingResearch ?

Let’s connect…
