It was a very deep rabbit hole of reverse engineering, looking for exploits, cross compiling, messing with scripts, finding vulnerabilities, reinventing the wheel and a lot of research.
But the work is not done, now it's to make it actually useful 😂

Oooooh....! Test our #BikeGenerators in #Paris, #Rotterdam, and #Barcelona

"#LowTechMagazine built a bicycle generator for an exhibition on energy at the Pavillon d’Arsenal in Paris, now open to the public. Our two other bikes can be seen and experimented with in Rotterdam and Barcelona."

Initiatives like @SafeguardingResearch work hard to rescue #researchData that are (about to be) deleted by the Trump administration, by using a Bittorrent network where many small nodes contribute.
This is a very #solarpunk way of doing science: community-driven, decentralized & resilient #SolarpunkScience.
Some tinker projects:
🎯1. Develop the most low-cost (in €, material resources, and CO2) p2p solution for data rescueing.
Maybe a #RaspberryPi + existing HDD? Reuse existing hardware. Compute costs in absolute and relative way (€ and CO2 per terabyte of data stored & shared). Is a bigger server plugged to a uni network more efficient in relative costs?
🎯2. Run a hackathon, help others to install the bittorrent clients on whatever machine they have.
🎯3 (Bonus): Build a purely solar powered, autonomous seeding node. E.g. the #LowTechMagazine went a long way in optimizing a web server that runs on solar + battery (achieving >95% uptime on a 50W solar setup)
https://solar.lowtechmagazine.com/2020/01/how-sustainable-is-a-solar-powered-website/
Imagine little autonomous, solar powered seeding nodes standing in gardens, tirelessly sharing research data whenever the sun is shining. A project that regenerates our digital commons in a sustainable, community-led way 🌱.
Please share your thoughts - is this a feasible and worthwhile project?

Hi #LOWTECHMAGAZINE's readers :)
I'm about to restock #lowtech magazine's books in my Brussels' studio and trying to figure out how many to order.
Do you leave in Bxl / Rotterdam and are interested in purchasing a copy physically, instead of online (to save shipping costs)? I'm specifically talking about our latest book, the Compressed Edition (https://solar.lowtechmagazine.com/2025/03/the-compressed-book-edition/).
The catalogue and online shop is here: https://solar.lowtechmagazine.com/offline-reading/
Chores done, now imma get baked in the garden, hang with the hounds, smoke a turkey on the bbq and read Low Tech magazine.
@Julianoe
BRUSSELS — BOOK LAUNCH — 29.4
→ How to make books more sustainable? During this evening, Low-tech Magazine will present our "Compressed Book Edition", this time in Brussels, at Architecture Curating Practice's gallery.
→ Inspired by the image compression on its solar-powered website, Low-tech Magazine squeezed the article catalog of their three-volume chronological book series into just one book. Compressing the content — an editorial and design choice — produces a larger reduction in resource use than printing on recycled paper could ever do.
🕰 18:30 Doors open
19:00 Book presentation and introduction of Low-tech Magazine
19:45 Q&A
20:00 Book sale / snacks & drinks / discussion
📌 Architecture curating practice,
et al. architect-run space
37 Rue des Tanneurs / Huidevettersstraat 137

@shoppingtonz I think to counter the monopoly youtube has, things like peertube are needed, where people can browse and search like on youtube.
I think people will host more of these if the overhead was lower, but I'm hoping to find a way to make low res, super compressed videos still be enjoyable to watch and visually appealing, which is why I was inspired by the way #lowTechMagazine shares their images
With youtube appearing to join in the hate-speech-for-trans-people bandwagon https://www.usermag.co/p/youtube-removes-gender-identity-from , I'm thinking how we can make community video hosting easier. Peertube is great, but instances are much more limited, I assume due to file size.
What if there was an option for hosts to limit videos to 2bit, like the amazing #LowTechMagazine ? (image from them below) 50x reduced file size seems doable, hopefully would encourage a lot more hosts

📖 NEW BOOK 📖
→ Our new book - The Compressed Book edition - is available for sale in our online store! To reduce the resources involved with producing each copy, we squeezed our article archive (3 volumes) in just one book!
We did this by switching to a smaller font size (similar to the one used in the comments book), by downsizing most images, and by opting for a two-column layout. We rewrote some articles, especially older ones, resulting not only in fewer pages but also in better articles.
As all our books, it's printed on demand, which means they is no overproduction.
→ EVENT REMINDER
We are organising a book launch to celebrate in Barcelona (at Akasha Barcelona) this Friday (28.3). We will present the book and follow-up with a discussion on books and sustainability. We also have a number of copies for sale! All the info in the article below

Anyone here has done #web2print with hugo?
We are starting something with #lowtechmagazine and I would love to see some examples of folder structures, how to handle different image formatting etc. :)
So if anyone has a repo to share, please shout!

Recenty ( #kürzlich ) #LowtechMagazine came to my mind again.
Nice to have that sill around:
Just stumbled upon the #LowTechMagazine #Comic which I thought was a fun read that touches on numerous articles on the site:

@kim thanks for the links (I love #lowtechmagazine ) - this is for my garage back room which houses all my various solar based projects, currently it's sitting at 5degC. It would be nicer if it was a little bit warmer to work in (but it's not urgent).
I'm not allowed to modify our house or my partner will be furious!
