"A huge sand battery is set to slash the carbon emissions of a Finnish town.

"The industrial-scale storage unit in Pornainen, southern Finland, will be the world’s biggest sand battery when it comes online within a year.

"Capable of storing 100 MWh of thermal energy from solar and wind sources, it will enable residents to eliminate oil from their district heating network, helping to cut emissions by nearly 70 per cent.

" 'It's exciting to build a large-scale thermal energy storage, which will also act as a primary production plant in Pornainen's district heating network,' says Liisa Naskali, COO at Polar Night Energy, the company behind the innovation.

I've shared a few notes about these sand-based heat batteries before, but this is a cool (pun intended) development: instead of sand, using the waste rock material from soapstone fireplace manufacturing for a 100 MWh installation that enables the municipality to remove oil burners and replace them will surplus electricity stored as heat.

Capacity and dimensions

The Sand Battery has been packed with 2,000 tons of soapstone, equal to the weight of one thousand soapstone fireplaces. It will become the main power source for Pornainen's district heating network. The battery will be capable of generating 1 megawatt (MW) of power and storing 100MWh of energy. In terms of dimensions, this one-of-a-kind battery will be about 13 meters tall and 15 meters wide.

I'm interested in building a #StirlingEngine that has enough power to spin a hoverboard motor. Not entirely sure of what scale I'm in for, that sounds like I have a lot to learn. I have a large canning cooker that I hope to use as a sand battery.
