'Global temperatures have been rising for decades. But many scientists say it’s now happening faster than ever before...“We’re not continuing on the same path we had before,” said Robert Rohde, chief scientist at Berkeley Earth. “Something has changed.”'

@Wintergr33n

The existential seriousness of what is happening is not in the media cycle enough.

It needs to be repeated 24/7 to affect people?

and framed as deadly serious...

@kumarvibe I understood Scotland and the rest of the British Isles would have Scandinavian winters without the warm jet stream.

"Earth’s climate is now departing from the stable conditions that supported human civilization for millennia. Crossing critical temperature thresholds may trigger self-reinforcing feedbacks and tipping dynamics that amplify warming and destabilize distant Earth system components. Uncertain tipping thresholds make precaution essential, as crossing them could commit the planet to a hothouse trajectory with long-lasting and potentially irreversible consequences."

The #Arctic is warming 4 times faster than the rest of the Earth, and this is particularly pronounced in #greenland

The main driver is #globalwarming. But there’s another factor that’s making the problem even worse: pigmented algae on the ice

2 🆕 studies show that both the underlying ice and mineral dust from the surrounding area can provide enough nutrients for the algae to bloom every summer.

Where do nutrients for algae on ice come from ?

The mallards are blooming early this year. The early bloom appears to have resulted in just the head growing, and not the rest of the fryer bound body. For the duck foragers, maybe let this seasons crop sit in place so their spores can propagate into full ducks next year.

Nel silenzio generale e senza il consenso dei cittadini, potenti industrie inquinanti e i loro alleati politici stanno smantellando le leggi ambientali europee. In nome del profitto sacrificano salute, natura e futuro.

“The world is closer than thought to a “point of no return” after which runaway global heating cannot be stopped, {The best climate} scientists have said.” Damian Carrington, Environment editor, Guardian, 120226. Yes, but on the plus side, humans will become extinct and the Earth can start repairing itself.

Now or Never by Tim Flannery, 2018

Why We Must Act Now to End Climate Change and Create a Sustainable Future

A forceful call to climate change action and a pragmatic roadmap toward sustainability from the internationally acclaimed author of The Weather Makers . Utilizing the most up-to-the-minute data available, Tim Flannery offers a guided tour of the environmental challenges we face and their potential solutions in both the big picture and in specific detail.

He explores everything from techniques for storing the carbon that dead plants release into the earth to the fragile balancing act between energy demands and food supply in India and China, from carbon-trading schemes in South America to a collaboration between a Danish wind-energy company and an automobile manufacturer that may produce a viable electric car and end the reign of big oil. Now or Never is a powerful, thought-provoking, and essential book about the most urgent issue of our time. It burns with Flannery's characteristic mix of passion, scientific precision, and "offhand interdisciplinary brilliance" ( Entertainment Weekly). "Shocking . . . [Flannery] writes for a general audience with passion and clarity.
