I saw this same bill and was going to comment on it. But I could never have come close to how masterfully @lettforsc conveyed what a total & utter embarrassment this is!

Just a light one today, to get us off to a good start this week.

I know the "orca hat" story inspired many cute memes in the last few days, but it's not just a misrepresentation of the data here; it's also part of a pattern in news media that we need to look out for, if we're going to be better prepared for other, more dangerous forms of clickbait in the months ahead.

Okee, my nephew just sent me pictures of his latest test and one of the questions claims the density of aluminum is 0.1309 g/cm³.

For the uninitiated–which this teacher should not be–the density of balsa wood, probably the least dense wood there is (I’m not looking it up) is on the order of 0.1 to 0.15 g/cm³. Liquid water is 1 g/cm³.

Ah! That must be why they make boats out of aluminum! 💡

A science test question which contains the statement “The known density of aluminum is 0.1309 g/cm³ ”.
In fact, aluminum has a density of around 2.7 g/cm³, greater than water…

For Rewind Wednesday, we keep this week's society-building theme going with a look at Otto Neurath, a member of the Vienna Circle and a key part of urban planning and semiotic history, whose way of thinking about human spaces (for better and for worse) helped to shape our approach to public policy and civic education today.

I rewrote Wednesday's piece because the first version was very grumpy. This one is less so!

Today, we talk about other animals' violence, and how poorly we tell stories about it.

But just because we keep getting in our own way, when trying to describe the rest of the natural world, doesn't mean we can't still learn something from the stories we tell about it.

Scientific literacy: Great advice for teachers, good advice for us all. When a presidential candidate claims sea levels will rise 1/8-1/4 of an inch in 400 years, while the sea level near his Florida home is rising that much in 9 months, how can people unpack what are valid inferences from scientific knowledge? One of my many alma maters is running a FREE course on science literacy: learning how to differentiate between science, pseudoscience, fake science, and fraudulent science – and to explain what makes pseudoscience both attractive and dangerous.

It was an honour to teach and at @BardCollege 2024. This programme gives students the tools to evaluate the scientific information that they encounter in their daily lives. Everyone should take it! 😁 Also, look at one of our cool coliform plates!

Here is the cover for *From Typewriters to Twitter:Celebrating 50 Years of Science Writing* -- my pet project during the pandemic. (Pretty excited about this)

This might be the only book that chronicles science writing/ #scicomm in #Canada A digital version is available for free to members of the SWCC (after you log onto the website a link should appear under About). Non-members should contact the association directly and ask (not sure if there's a small fee or if it's free too?). 92 pages, lots of historical photos, short bios of some extraordinary and often eccentric and high-profile writers who helped shaped Canada's science writing landscape. Controversies! Romance! Serious stuff! Fun stuff! The impactful awards program! This book had input from over 20 people who played various roles in the association. This isn't an in-depth analysis, but chronicles important events and an evolving media association. There are no plans at this point for a print copy, but if interested send a note to the SWCC office expressing interest.

Members, log in at: sciencewriters.ca/

Non-members, contact (it may take a couple of days for a response): office@sciencewriters.ca

Scientists: how do you approach the subject of a scientific name versus a common name? What makes people so reticent to binomial names? We use them for humans in many contexts. We use them for certain animals and plants in others! I struggle with this because it feels like a self fulfilling prophecy, people hear two Latin names and shut down.

I think there would be wide audience. People who already watch the weather channel would love it. But it would:

1. Provide general knowledge of model physics
2. Show how models improve with more observations, and which observations are most important
3. Provide opportunities to discuss shifts in statistics (for statistical models) due to climate change

All of these benefits would provide more science literacy to a population that is increasingly dependent on science but also illiterate in science, for instance in matters of understanding public health models or longer term climate models.
