Here is the cover for *From Typewriters to Twitter:Celebrating 50 Years of Science Writing* -- my pet project during the pandemic. (Pretty excited about this)

This might be the only book that chronicles science writing/ #scicomm in #Canada A digital version is available for free to members of the SWCC (after you log onto the website a link should appear under About). Non-members should contact the association directly and ask (not sure if there's a small fee or if it's free too?). 92 pages, lots of historical photos, short bios of some extraordinary and often eccentric and high-profile writers who helped shaped Canada's science writing landscape. Controversies! Romance! Serious stuff! Fun stuff! The impactful awards program! This book had input from over 20 people who played various roles in the association. This isn't an in-depth analysis, but chronicles important events and an evolving media association. There are no plans at this point for a print copy, but if interested send a note to the SWCC office expressing interest.

Members, log in at: sciencewriters.ca/

Non-members, contact (it may take a couple of days for a response): office@sciencewriters.ca

#COVID19 is not just like the #flu - ScienceUpFirst scienceupfirst.com/project/cov “Compared to the seasonal flu, #SARSCoV2:
• Is a #pandemic virus
• Has a higher #transmission rate
• Spreads even in the absence of symptoms
• Is #contagious for longer
• Still actively circulates all year long
Even though the mutation rate.. is low all these factors mean that up to now SARS-Cov-2 is always circulating among many individuals, which allows for more opportunities for variants to emerge”

HEADS UP HEADS UP HEADS UP! There is a LOT of serious (really serious, this time) talk, of #SciComm users finally (FINALLY!) exiting the avian droppings container. On the hellsite, off the hellsite, in the scientific journals and magazines, they're finally discussing it. THIS THE BEST NEWS EVER. Follow #MedMastodon #science #ScienceUpFirst #medicine #SARSCoV2 #COVID #COVID19 for all the latest updates and I will post my list of early adopters I've saved below:

Misinformation + ideology = tough combo!

"A strong partisan bias emerged for both veracity judgments and sharing decisions..."

"...sharing decisions were largely unaffected by actual information veracity."

"...partisan bias was a stronger & more reliable predictor of #misinformation susceptibility than truth sensitivity."

See: pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/369720.

"The problematic reframing of public health measures on social media, in the popular press and by politicians contributes to real harm and has set a dangerous precedent."

"Lockdown revisionism has tended to frame public health measures as a form of subjugation by elites, while positioning public health as oppressive and fundamentally anti-individualistic."

Enjoyed this chat with Adrieanne Arsenault on CBC The National about problematic "immune boosting" claims...

"The truth about immune boosters: Orange peels, echinacea, vitamin IVs" cbc.ca/player/play/21651251875

Science surrounding most claims iffy. Best approach: #healthylifestyle, #vaccines, #washhands, etc.

With the rise in misinformation, hate, & harassment on social media, I'm upping my "take a beat" strategy.

Studies consistently show that pausing, even for a moment, can help slow spread of bunk (see nature.com/articles/s41586-021 & misinforeview.hks.harvard.edu/).

Most people want to be accurate. A nudge in that direction can make a difference.

@ScienceUpFirst@twitter.com:
What are the differences between the vaccine for people 12+ and the vaccine for those 5-11?

Check out our quick guide!

🧵 [1/8]

#ScienceUpFirst
Comparing the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccines

Adult vaccine, for people 12+
- vial has a purple cap
- 0.3mL injection containing 30mcg of mRNA
- Uses phosphate buffered saline (PBS) as a buffer. Buffers help maintain a vaccine’s pH and stability while being stored.

Kid vaccine, for people 5-11
- vial has an orange cap
- 0.2mL injection containing 10 mcg of mRNA. This was the lowest dose tested in clinical trials that still gave a strong immune response.
- Uses tromethamine (Tris) as a buffer instead of PBS. Tris is a very common and safe medical ingredient. With Tris as a buffer, vaccines can be stored unopened in regular refrigerators for up to 10 weeks. The total volume of buffers in the vaccine is very low.
