Decades-old barrels of industrial waste still impacting ocean floor off Los Angeles
In 2020, haunting images of corroded metal barrels in the deep ocean off #LosAngeles leapt into the public consciousness. Initially linked to the toxic #pesticide #DDT, some #barrels were encircled by ghostly halos in the sediment.
It was unclear whether the barrels contained DDT waste, leaving the barrels' contents and the eerie halos unexplained.
Now, new research from UC San Diego's #Scripps Institution of Oceanography reveals that the barrels with halos contained caustic alkaline waste, which created the halos as it leaked out.
Though the study's findings can't identify which specific #chemicals were present in the barrels, DDT manufacturing did produce alkaline as well as acidic waste. Other major industries in the region, such as oil refining, also generated significant alkaline waste.
"One of the main waste streams from DDT production was #acid and they didn't put that into barrels," said Johanna Gutleben, a Scripps postdoctoral scholar and the study's first author. "It makes you wonder: What was worse than DDT acid waste to deserve being put into barrels?"

FLIP has been saved! The #Scripps #ship was scheduled to be scrapped, but UK undersea design company #DEEP has bought this ship, and it is being refitted to modernize power and other now outdated features.
The iconic, and frankly rather strange, #research platform built in 1962 was designed to be towed to a location and would be partially sunk to "flip" it along its main axis. This design made it very stable in the water column for #oceanographic #science research.
This semester, the progressive, student-run Motley Coffeehouse at Scripps College in Claremont, CA, hung a Palestinian flag in the space. The administration ordered it removed, saying it made the cafe unwelcoming for some. The coffeehouse refused.
This morning, as the cafe was preparing to host a "Market for Mutual Aid" to raise funds for folks in the Congo, Palestine, and Sudan, Scripps shut down the coffeehouse, and in the twisted logic of power, deployed feminist language in doing so, claiming closing the space will preserve "the feminist and intersectional ethos that has shaped the Motley’s culture." As much as Scripps wishes it to be the case, this is certainly not the end of the story.

local news in my burg really sucks. So I opted to try #Scripps news on the antenna TV. I was really surprised to see a very unbalanced analysis of someone’s position on abortion. The television analyst had someone on who is very biased and used loaded words/code words to describe both candidates. The guest used the honorific for the person they supported, but did not for the person on the other side of the political spectrum. I was surprised that the tv analyst did not call them out on that.
