#SmashTunes

I’ll be probably by the only user that wants to control #Volumio by making use of #SmashTunes, the #macOS app for displaying #Spotify and #AppleMusic. But hey, I’m the author of this software, so why not add this functionality?

Playing around with #websockets now. A basic setup is in place. Nice to work with open hard ware.

I must add that I’m super happy with my #Rivo+ Any other owners out here? Or #Volumio users?

Today the new version of #SmashTunes was released. It got through the review process, without any modifications on my part. This answers the #widget question I had yesterday: widgets can keep running after their main process quits. They are independent.

The new version of SmashTunes contains some bug fixes btw.

So I’m preparing an update to #SmashTunes and I’m having a question for anyone out there who has a #macOS #widget accompanying their app. In my case the widget shows the album artwork of the currently playing song in either #applemusic or #Spotify.
So here’s the question: should the widget terminate when my app quits or can it keep on running? If it should terminate, how to do that? My main app has no PID or other reference to the widget. I’m curious on your take.

@matt Good to hear that you like #SmashTunes 😀 I don’t know what the market is, it’s niche within niche 😉 I should probably do some marketing or market research, but that’s not my cup of tea (and it’s a hobby project).
To be honest you’re the first to ask. My mind was on adding support for playback of #ListenBrainz suggestions. But that’s quite a big one.

@matt I used to scrobble to Last.fm myself, but I also forgot to start the client all the time 😉 I lost interest in scrobbling, until a few years ago. I looked into and was not really impressed by Last.fm, so I implemented support for #ListenBrainz into #SmashTunes. ListenBrainz is quite similar to Last.fm, offering recommendations as well these days.
This is not really an answer to your question 😀

I could add Lastfm to SmashTunes

Do you have any APP RECOMMENDATIONS for little Mac OS apps that will scrobble music to Last.fm?

Something that has a small visual footprint like SmashTunes by @HendrikLinde.

The official Last.fm app works but I always forget to open it, or accidentally close it.

I was a bit optimistic about the one-time purchase option. Apparently, in-app purchases need to be reviewed as well these days, but are part of a separate review process.

If you want to purchase #SmashTunes instead of subscribing to it, you will need a little bit of patience. You have a trial period of 30 days anyway.

Are there any SmashTunes users on #mastodon anyway?

I'm about to submit a new version of #SmashTunes to #Apple for review. Just waiting for the system to process the binary package.
This new version contains support for #Spotify playlists. You now can select them for playback, but you can also add tracks to playlists (if you want using a hot key).
It's quite a big version, because I refactored all of the playlist logic, which was #AppleMusic centred.

O, and I added to option to #purchase SmashTunes in stead of subscribing to it.

#macOS

After waiting almost 3 months for #spotify to grant me the required API extension, I've started on the implementation of playlist support for Spotify in my #macOS app #SmashTunes. The idea is that you will be to able to playback playlists and add tracks to them, right from the menu bar of your #Mac. Or use #shortcuts. This already works for #applemusic
I hope to release it early next year.

I’m thinking about adding the option to #buy #SmashTunes (smashbits.nl/smashtunes) next to current yearly #subscription option. I’m not too sure if that would add anything, but I sense some resentment towards subscriptions (also here on Mastodon). Maybe it is #software specific?

What do you think?

A new version of #SmashTunes is available that allows you to add #AppleMusic tracks to your library (again). This was broken because of changes to the #MusicApp. As a bonus, tracks that you give a rating are also added to your library.

In the mean time I'm still waiting for the people or systems at #Spotify to grant me additional rights, so I can also implement adding tracks to Spotify playlists.

Yesterday I released a new version of #SmashTunes (smashbits.nl/smashtunes/). That’s great of course. But it was only a patch release. It fixes a problem with the #Spotify API for liking tracks by SmashTunes. It turned out that Spotify changed this API over night. No deprecations whatsoever. O, these naughty big corporations! Tsss. Anyway, the fix was easy, and tracks can be liked again. Not that this dip in likes would have been noticed 😉

I found out the other day that adding tracks the your #AppleMusic library from #SmashTunes no longer works. It is not a function that I use often, I mostly add music to my library on my phone, but it should work anyway.
I found out that #Apple copied a feature I added to SmashTunes: add tracks you love to your library. In the process something broke. It’s fine to add favourites to your library, but I don’t want to make everything a favourite. I add stuff for later listens. How about you?

Just found out that one of the features of #SmashTunes that I use from time to time: Add Track to Library stopped working.
My guess is that #apple in all its wisdom has decided you must Love ❤️ a track to have it added to your #AppleMusic library. That’s not how my workflow is. I add music to my library to kind of bookmark it. I only favourite tracks that I really like, to have them stand out.
I remove music from my library that, on second listen, turn out to be meh. 🫤

Today I've looked into an issue that was reported as a bad review through the #apple #appstore. I think it is a pity when people leave a bad review, without contacting you.

What do you think? Are reviews suitable to report bugs?

With the advent of #macOS #Sequoia it looks like keyboard shortcuts that use the alt aka option key no longer work in #SmashTunes, my #Spotify and #AppleMusic utility. I’m guessing that the deprecated #carbon api, that I’m using is showing signs of actual deprecation. I would have expected it to stop working altogether, maybe #Apple chooses a gradual phase out? Or maybe they want to remove the alt key altogether 😉

Anyway, I am working on a fix to start using the CGEvent tap api.

#Indiedev

Last Friday I released a bug fix release of my app #SmashTunes. I just submitted a new bug fix release for review. This release contains only very minor fixes, for very rare crashes of my app. So no user-reported issues. Still I decided to fix them and release it.

The only concern I have is, if my users will be bothered by installing yet another update in such a short time frame. Is that a genuine concern? What do you think?

I just released a new version of #SmashTunes from the camp site in #France. I might call this release #Vanoise 😉 This version was ready for 2 months, but was not released pending a quota extension for the #Spotify API. It took the Spotify two months to grant me the extension.
Anyway, you can now like tracks via SmashTunes (optionally trough hot keys). Just continue whatever you’re doing, saving you a trip to the Spotify #macOS app.

To celebrate the release I took a picture of a French rock.

@macandi Eine andere möglichkeit ist es um #SmashTunes zu nützen: smashbits.nl/en/smashtunes/ Dann kannst du auch werten ohne Musik zu öffnen.

This morning a new release of #SmashTunes for #AppleMusic & #Spotify was released. For a long time I was mainly focused on #AppleMusic, because that's what I was using myself plus the less open nature of #Spotify on the #Mac itself. But #Spotify has an #api, so I'm now using that to make It possible to Like tracks. Works like a charm. The only downside: it is not very easy to see if a track was liked inside of the Spotify app itself. That will be focus of the next version.
