"Ken Nordine Does Robert Shure's 'Twink' by Ken Nordine released on Phillips in 1967.

Die or DIY? wrote:

"The unfortunately titled "Twink",first published in 1957, was a popular selling pamphlet of quirky poetry by someone called Robert Shure, hence the title...In true space-age batchelor pad style, Nordine uses the stereo spread to appear to be talking to himself with one voice recorded dry, the other recorded with effects. It sounds a bit like the voice one hears during a sudden attack of paranoid Schizophrenia. In between every track ,for some reason, there are different styles of tinkling bells,as if entering a small Haberdashers every minute for half an hour.
As always, Nordine's silky baritone makes this a soothing but surreal, and accidently psychedelic nostalgia trip.Like watching a Mr Magoo cartoon..."

Ended Monday and started Tuesday after a swim with Sea of Dreams, Nelson Riddle’s fifth studio album, released in March 1958.

The inspiration for Nelson Riddle’s conception of the theme of Sea of Dreams was the setting of his California home on the shoreline of the Pacific Ocean. A departure from his previous albums that were composed of arrangements characterized as bright and danceable, Sea of Dreams consists of music said to be “especially moving and romantic,” performed by a large string orchestra.

Cash Box said Riddle takes “the listener on a slow mood excursion,” with “a lush string treatment to a dozen romantic selections.”

One reviewer observed that Sea of Dreams fell on “the romantic side of the Exotica genre.” “Instead of interweaving exotic percussion with the surroundings, Riddle concentrates exclusively on the strings, leaving a small niche for mallet instruments and bells of all kinds.” - Wikipedia

C’mon . . . Get Happy! was Nelson Riddle’s fourth studio album, released in October 1957.

C’mon…Get Happy! followed quickly on the heels of Riddle's “Hey...Let Yourself Go!,” which had been released six months earlier, in April 1957, and had enjoyed commercial success. The album liner notes characterized the new collection as “some of the brightest, most danceable music ever,” with “sparkling, up-tempo numbers.”

One reviewer observed that “most of this album's 12 songs are upbeat and enthusiastic, and even the slower numbers boast a purposeful swing and the arrangements are punchy and gracefully embroidered with exceptional instrumental work from Riddle's studio orchestra.” - Wikipedia

Sound Tour: Hawaii (Impressions In Sound Of An American On Tour) by Kenyon Hopkins released on Verve in 1962

Cinema Sojourns wrote on a blog entry Searching for Kenyon Hopkins:

With Creed Taylor serving as producer, MGM’s Verve label put out a series of records in partnership with Esquire Magazine in the mid-60s – that were all composed by Hopkins. Here is an excerpt from an article on the Verve/Esquire project by C. Andrew Hoyan on the All About Jazz web site: “…Much like his soundtrack work, Hopkins imbues his charts with jazz sensibilities and such names as Phil Woods, Hank Jones, Joe Wilder, and Doc Severinsen were on hand for all of the sessions..Engineers Ray Hall and Bob Simpson further augmented the stereo terrain by adding Keene Crockett’s “sound pictures” here and there, such as boat whistles and a revved up Alfa Romero speeding away from some Spanish villa..."

Ended yesterday and started today with Satin Brass by George Shearing released in 1960 on Capitol.

Satin Brass Review by Scott Yanow

The George Shearing Quintet (comprised of piano, vibes, guitar, bass and drums) is joined by four trumpets, four trombones, two French horns and a tuba for a dozen easy-listening performances on this Capitol LP. The pianist/leader arranged the majority of the selections which include a few standards and several obscurities. Although the instrumentation might lead one to believe that this LP will contain shouting performances, actually the playing is often quite mellow and restrained with the Quintet very much in the lead throughout. Nice music but not too essential.

Welcomed sleep and greeted the new day after my swim with Latin Affair a 1959 album by pianist George Shearing.

The initial Billboard magazine review from November 30, 1959 chose the album as one of its "Special Merit Spotlights" and commented that "Shearing serves up his usual, lightly swingy, delicately phrased instrumental treatments of a group of Latin themes and standards...all dressed up in an infectious Latin beat".

Latin Affair and Shearing's 1958 album Latin Lace were featured in Tom Moon's 2008 book 1,000 Recordings to Hear Before You Die - Wikipedia

Latin Lace is a 1958 album by jazz pianist George Shearing and his quintet.

Latin Lace is one of a number of themed recordings with deliberately sexualised album covers that Shearing and his quintet produced in the 1950s; in his 2005 autobiography Lullaby of Birdland, Shearing recalled that the liner notes for the album implored the listener to "add a little spice into your pad with these twelve hot little numbers!".

Scott Yanow reviewed the album for Allmusic and awarded it three stars, commenting that "The second of pianist George Shearing's full-length Latin albums once again finds his quintet...being joined by the exciting congas of Armando Peraza Most of the easy-listening melodies are from south of the border, but even the ones that aren't (such as "The Story of Love," "The Moon Was Yellow" and "It's Not for Me to Say") are given a Latinized treatment. ...". - Wikipedia

Hey...Let Yourself Go! was Nelson Riddle’s third studio album, released in April 1957

For Hey...Let Yourself Go!, Riddle assembled a dozen “carefree, up-tempo rhythms,” as the liner notes characterized them. "The twelve tunes presented here are an irresistible invitation to let yourself go and get on with the dance ... "

Hey...Let Yourself Go! was well received. Cash Box characterized Riddle's work as "12 sparkling and inventive arrangements in dance tempo", and dubbed the album a "happy, rhythmic offering". The album was said to have captured Riddle's style "at its most frothy and effervescent", with "upbeat numbers that swing, but with an easygoing grace" - Wikipedia

Welcomed sleep and then greeted Woden's day after a walk with one of the cats with Oscar Peterson and Nelson Riddle a 1963 album by Oscar Peterson with orchestra arranged and conducted by Nelson Riddle. The album was produced by Jim Davis and released on Verve Records.

Billboard magazine described the album as follows: "A neat teaming of talents here brings Peterson more strongly into the pop area than at any time in the past. Riddle's arrangements blend handsomely with their 10 celli, 5 horn and 5 flute voicings, with Peterson's perhaps underplayed pianistics here. There is, in fact, a kind of Claude Thornhill quality to these proceedings, making for strong mood as well as jazz buyer appeal."

The album was nominated at the 1965 Grammy Awards in the category of Best Instrumental Jazz Performance - Large Group or Soloist with Large Group.
