It’s a weird little swampy bit, full of what many would call #InvasiveWeeds. Yet it’s beautiful in its way and full of #diversity. I spotted dock, fennel, wild lettuce, wild radish, plantain, clover, endemic Solander’s geranium, sow thistle, and lots more, which I chucked into #iNaturalist. Now we’ve got this new independent grocery store just 400m from home, I think I’ll be down this way a lot more, so I’ll keep an eye on the spot. #ballarat #BallaratEast #SpecimenVale #wetlands #nativeplants

A swampy spot, or seasonal wetland, along the Specimen Creek path in Ballarat East. Picture shows a broad view with a mixture of low-lying herbs and grasses in the foreground, the shimmer of a few square metres of water in the middle distance, and native and introduced trees in the background. A gravel path runs away from the viewer on the right of the picture.A different angle of the water, with grass seed-heads in the background and trees and sky reflected in a small pool.Solander’s geranium, a kind of cranesbill or hardy geranium which are a separate genus from the “geraniums” (actually pelargoniums) people grow on their windowsill. The leaves are very fine and delicate, and there’s a tiny pale pink flower, about 1cm across, with five petals and yellow stamen at the centre.
