๐ŸŒน toadshade ๐ŸŒฟ Trillium sessile #nativeplants #ecoregion71

a blooming toadshade seen from the side, growing up from the tree-leaf-lined forest floor on a stout green stem. the stem terminates in a whorl of three large, slightly mottled, light green leaves, longer than wide, two of which are visible while the third is hidden behind the flower which sits directly on top of the three leaves. the flower had three lance-like sepals spread nearly flat, alternating with three lance-shaped maroon petals standing mostly erect but angled outward. in the center there are six long, erect inward-curving stamens, mostly maroon but fading to green at the top, with yellow anthers on their outside edges facing inward.looking down on a blooming toadshade from directly above to appreciate its 3-fold symmetry. it has three large light green leaves with a modest darker green mottled pattern. alternating with the leaves are three light green sepals which have reddish margins & a reddish patch in the middle by the base. the three maroon petals are aligned with the leaves, offset from the sepals; dark parallel veins run up the petals. in the center six stamens bow towards each other, maroon turning to green on their outsides with yellow on the edges.a colony of toadshades growing among brown and tan fallen tree leaves on the forest floor. each one has three light green mottled leaves; some have green flowerbuds growing on top of their leaves; and others are topped by blooming maroon flowers.

๐ŸŒผ rue anemone ๐ŸŒฟ Thalictrum thalictroides it is a coincidence that these three blooming buttercup-family flowers all happen to have 7 sepals, the number can vary from individual to individual #nativeplants #ecoregion71

close-up of a flower with seven sightly cupped, white, petal-like sepals (there are no true petals). in the center of the flower there are a dozen or so light green carpels which pale to nearly white at the stigmas at their tops. surrounding the carpels are numerous stamens with yellow anthers atop long, slender white filaments. a cream-green budding flower sits behind the blooming flower in the foreground, along with some reddish-green leaf-like bracts with three shallow lobes and a branching network of lighter veins. a spider is hiding behind one of the bracts, with only a few brown legs exposed.three blooming flowers facing the sky, each with seven white petal-like sepals curving slightly upwards. in the center of each flower is a cloud of numerous stamens with yellow anthers on long, slender, upward-curving filaments surrounding a cluster of light green carpels. the blooming flowers are accompanied by a couple pale green budding flowers each on their own slender flowerstem sharing a common origin; this node also the anchor for a whorl of leaf-like 3-lobed bracts. below this node, the plant's stem is red. these rue anemones are growing up from among a bed of fallen tree leaves.the forest floor is blanketed in orange-brown and tan fallen tree leaves, with green shoots and leaves of various plants poking through here and there. in the center of the photo, the white petal-like sepals of three blooming flowers are blindingly bright in the sunlight which pours through the still-leafless forest canopy.

The western red bud is a magenta flowering beauty. Iโ€™d love to know what the moths sense of it at night #WesternRedBud #Yarden #NativePlants

๐ŸŒผ virginia saxifrage ๐ŸŒฟ Micranthes virginiensis #nativeplants #ecoregion71

a tightly-packed panicle of flowers with five flaring white petals around a cluster of nearly a dozen yellow stamens with a few styles thrown into the mix too.a virginia saxifrage seen from the side. the plant has a basal rosette of green leaves with scalloped margins, also a bright red tint at the margins too very lovely. up from the center of the rosette grows a stout red stem absolutely covered in fine white hairs that would probably be really annoying to climb up if you were a lil bug. at the top of the red stem there's a dense panicle of flowers with five white petals with nearly a dozen yellow stamens plus a few styles in the center.virginia saxifrage growing on a steep rock ledge, a very common place to find them. the lower parts of the escarpment are mostly bare rock, while brownish-green moss has managed to colonize a short crease above. in the center, saxifrage rosettes cling to the uneven rock & send up flowering stalks topped with bunches of white flowers.

An Oak Tree a Day Quercus lobata twice as wide as it is tall & itโ€™s pretty tall & straight at that. Check out the trash can and picnic bench for a size comparison. Thereโ€™s also a bee hive in this tree which explains why the bench was moved a little further away. California #nativePlants #nature

A very large oak tree straddles an asphalt path and reaches to an adjacent property surrounded by a brick wall and green grassesA closer look at the trunk of this oak straight and tall. A picnic bench and galvanized trash can are dwarfed by the huge tree. Graffiti on the brick wall adjacent has been painted over in a lighter tone that doesnโ€™t match the brick. The tree is surrounded by green grasses.

Little closed buds of white persimmon flowers on stems with deep green leaves. The flowers look cute, but also kind of like nefarious pod monsters that could burst open to attack at any moment.

Here is an unassuming little fern in my garden. Asplenium trichomanes, maidenhair spleenwort. You wouldn't guess that it has one of the largest natural ranges of any vascular plant on the planet. It's found on six continents for sure and possibly now in Antarctica as well. It has very tiny spores that can easily get wind-blown high up into the atmosphere and right around the planet. It grows most anywhere but prefers rocky places with adequate moisture. #gardening

๐ŸŒผ bloodroot ๐ŸŒฟ Sanguinaria canadensis one of my faves, named for their caustic red sap #nativeplants #ecoregion71

a flower with 11 stark white, elliptic petals with faint parallel veins running their length. one of them is dinky and sorta wilted, but there is a degree of variability in the sizes of all of the petals. a mosquito is perched by the tip of one of the petals. at the center of the flower there is a light green pistil with a pale yellow cleft stigma, surrounded by stamens with white filaments and narrow yellow anthers.a single bloodroot in bloom with its basal leaf growing large & unfurling, growing on the forest floor among fallen tree leaves & sticks and other small fresh green shoots and leaves. the waxy green leaf is broad and palmate, with 7 fairly deep lobes, is angled upwards and nearly planar, though there is a slight curve across the leaf and the lowest lobes have yet to flatten out. above the leaf on a reddish stem, the flower has around 9 or so sorta narrow white petals, can't tell for certain because some of them are edge-on to our perspective. at the center of the flower, a profusion of stamens with white filaments and golden yellow anthers stand at varying heights, mostly but not entirely obscuring a light green pistil with yellow stigma.four blooming bloodroot flowers poking up through dead grass and brown fallen treen leaves, each with a small, light green, undeveloped leaf of its own wrapped around the base of the flower's reddish stem. the flowers have varying number of petals; those here blooming now have 8 or 9 elliptic white petals. in the center of the flowers there are many stamens with golden yellow anthers surrounding a light green pistil with a yellow stigma.

#MarshMadness. The ephemeral waterway below the pond has plenty of water after Thursdayโ€™s rain.

A narrow channel of sun-sparkled water is seen below the contorted trunk and limbs of a willow tree. Beside the stream are tall dried grasses and shrubs with reddish stems (silky dogwood).

I think??? these are some of my butterfly weed coming back? Such go-getters. I hope the cold nights later this week won't quash them. ๐ŸŒฑ #nativeplants ๐Ÿฆ€โ›ต #Maryland ๐ŸŒŽ #ecoregion65

The cycle begins again. These are the first cotton flower blossoms since the fall. Iโ€™ve taken a break from my #spinning hobby as other things have taken over my interest lately. Iโ€™m excited to return to it whenever the time is right. In the meantime, the plants I started last year are ready to produce again and Iโ€™m starting new seedlings as well. #gardening #NativePlants #zone10

Be Aware When Spring "Cleaning"

๐Ÿž Check your timing when you begin clearing garden areas in the spring. Beneficial insects may still be overwintering in growth and stems.

๐Ÿ‚ Pic 1: This area of dead, overgrown iris leaves is a good example of a spot to overwinter, if you are a bug, so it was left until they had time to get active. (See link)

๐ŸŒป Pic 2: Waiting was not a problem, though. Time was used to create a design to maximize insect population support. Labels on the cleared area show that the design puts shorter natives at the 'top' of the bed and taller natives near the 'bottom'. Species prefer different heights.

๐Ÿฆ‹ This design also addresses the common view of this bed from beyond the 'top'. Now the many butterflies which will appear soon can easily be seen.
