Rachel Reeves may talk investment, but public ownership isn’t part of the plan.

That’s a mistake. From crumbling water companies to rip-off rail, privatisation has failed.

We lay out the case for renationalisation — and how to win hearts and minds.

"Rachael Reeves’ changes to fiscal rules — now much looser than first indicated when the party entered office – allow much more scope for an activist, investing state than before, because her new measure of national debt places much greater value on assets held by the state – such as public-sector stakes in private firms."

Last week's #SpendingReview fell far short of what people need to build a life beyond poverty.

This chart of changing priorities from spending review to spending review over the last quarter of a century is an interesting, contextualisation of Rachel Reeves announcement(s) this week....

The Institute for Government report from which this is taken offers a range of other useful insights & is worth ten minutes of your time this weekend.

Chart: Ranks of the generosity of total departments settlements at spending reviews in selected departments, 1998-2025. perhaps most notable shows the decline in priority of education for no.1 in 1998 to fifth now, while most other department shave oscillated more widely up & down the priorities list;

So I was listening to a discussion of the Spending Review on the radio yesterday, and one commentator (I think it was probably Paul Johnson?) said that one problem with it was that there was absolutely no wiggle room, so if the economy started to perform even slightly worse than predicted, then we're going to be looking at some serious tax rises in the autumn budget.

Oops.

A major problem lies at the heart of Rachel Reeves' spending review;

Whatever one thinks of the spending, she's trying to square the circle of Dept.'s losing budget(s), by pointing to 'efficiency gains' that can (still) be made, not least by deploying more AI across the public sector.

Anyone who has worked in a complex organisation that has put 'efficiency gains' at the centre of budgeting constraints knows that it seldom delivers, leaving just declines in service delivery

London being “short changed” you say? That’s like someone with all the trains telling a person with no trains that it’s not fair that they might get some trains now.

Mikes take on the budgie? ooops budget!

As Britain clocks off for the day, let’s take stock: Rachel Reeves’s spending review outlines a cautious route forward — but is it the way out of crisis, or a longer detour into it?

In this piece, He explains what a truly responsible economic plan would look like — and why Labour won’t touch it.

Rachel Reeves's £200bn spending review looks like a turning point—real investment in public services, transport, and energy.

But scratch the surface and you’ll find the same old neoliberal logic at work: private profits, public risk.

Here’s our breakdown.

So now we are waiting to see how the headline figures in Rachel Reeves' spending review will play out... although its already pretty clear that for the Dept.s that lost out, the sorry tale of austerity will continue.

Given, the world of declaratory politics that we seem to live in, even the headline figures may end up being less than it currently appears.... but first we'll enter the process of plural announcements that will (my guess is) bleed out the detail.

"The Spending Review is not a Budget in which taxes are changed or a host of new policies announced. But, don't be fooled, it will have an impact on you and your money," writes Kevin Peachey for @BBCNews.

Here are the seven ways the spending review will affect you:
